New Canadian Politics Thread

Public transit is underfunded and is consequently shit. That's because people with cars don't want their money spent on transit or bike lanes. They want wider highways and more parking.

This is why people vote for people like Ford.

Wrong

Still wrong

The existing Via Rail terminal is like 600 meters from Hurdman station....I think someone can figure out how to make that work.

It's a 12 minute uber from Parliament Hill. Have you never actually been a tourist before?

Painfully stupid take. Points for making me laugh with a non ironic hyper loop shoutout though.

"public transit is garbage". When it's not funded properly sure. Everywhere it's invested in, it's fucking outstanding.

As for Calgary & Edmonton. Run it from whichever current end of the C train line makes the most sense (Tuscany would make more sense if you were trying to increase Banff tourism, Saddletown if you were trying to link it up with the airport) and run it to YEG, and then on the other end run the century line to the airport finally....if we're talking about shit that's in the middle of fucking nowhere and all.
But what if you don't want to actually think about how to fix problems or make things better? If your only interest is to write paragraph after paragraph whining and complaining that everything sucks, and then write a bunch more condescending paragraphs generalizing that large groups of people think exactly the same and also suck?

"People with cars" love good transit options and really don't want to have to drive everywhere they go.

Because trains are fucking fantastic when they're done even close to right. Massively superior for most trip types when available.

So you're saying that the only reason people don't take the train right now is because of the time it takes to get from one city to the other? Because thats bullshit. I've driven between Montreal and Toronto more times than I can count, going back to 1972. And I've taken the train between them hundreds of times also. Time-wise, the trains are a tad faster, unless you get on a milk run that stops in every hick town in Southern Ontario and they're relatively cheap and far more comfortable than the average airplane in coach. I very much doubt that shaving a couple of hours off the travel time combined with the inevitable tripling of the fare prices is going to make people leave their cars at home.

The train where? Here? No, that's not what I'm saying. The trains here are mostly dogshit. The discussion is about 300kmh trains between Quebec and Toronto. People would use the shit out of those trains.

You've never taken a good train on that route. Never.

High speed train on that route with take the trip from 5+ hours to about 3 hours, even with a transfer in Ottawa if the line runs through it.

I very much doubt that shaving a couple of hours off the travel time combined with the inevitable tripling of the fare prices is going to make people leave their cars at home.

No, it's not going to make you leave your car at home. It will make a huge % of people interested in making that trip leave their car at home though. It will also open the trip to the 30-40% of people living in the GTA who don't own a car.

You kind of need to accept that a ~65 yr old living in Edmonton might not be in touch with how people living in the GTA in 2024 want to get around.

65? Im a ways away from being that old
Also, I take the VIA from Toronto to Montreal once a year for my boys hockey weekend trip. Instead of driving in traffic and weather the 4 of us get on the train for about $50 each and spend a leisurely few hours shooting the shit and drinking. We get into downtown Montreal just in time to check into.our hotel. It's great.

But if that $50 trip suddenly becomes $300 just because it's faster? No bueno.

You referred to making the drive since 1972. That's 52 years ago.

Now imagine that, but it taking half of the time in a train car that isn't 30 years old.

But if that $50 trip suddenly becomes $300 just because it's faster?

Because nice things like high speed rail cost money. It's not being built so that the poors can travel more efficiently.

Show where this is true anywhere in the world high speed rail exists.

You've got it backwards. Driving a personal metal box everywhere you want to go is the exorbinantly expensive option out of the range of the poors, not train travel.

Those old trains were shakey as fuck. But the newer ones in the route are fine. Sure i wish they were faster, but they're still faster than taking the 401.

Id love high speed rail IF it isn't exorbitant expensive. I just don't have confidence in that.

One example of high speed rail where this is the case.

Just one.

Even the UK, which is kind of famous for having expensive, shit train service has similar routes to Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal and a ticket can be had in the 150 CAD range (return, London to Manchester) if you don't mind early morning departures.
