Because fwiw, we're up against our North American neighbour

Despite good growth numbers out of Mexico, but facing the same issues with the US as we are.

What were the driving forces behind it achieving parity like 15-20 years ago?

US credit crisis + price of oil (unrelated issues) that kind of hit at the same time.

The dollar was seen as an actual risk for the first time (the economy legit almost ground to a halt), Canada's stricter banking regulations caused us to miss the majority of the pain from the crash, and at the same time oil was hitting nominal record highs while we were in a production boom.

Was a perfect storm of sorts that it impossible to predict when/if something similar could happen in the future. I'd argue that we've let our productivity stagnate too far to ever see it happen again short of an economic event worse than the great depression were to occur in the US while at the same time barely touching us. A hell of a needle to thread.

He’s definitely not joking. Even the Greenland shit, as ridiculous and stupid as it is on its face, isn’t a joke to him either.

The only question is his commitment and the lengths he’s willing to go to try and turn his fantasy into a reality.

Which is where our best hopes lie—that some other shiny thing will come along and distract him, and his preoccupation with Canada will pass. Which is essentially how the whole Greenland thing played out in his first term.
terrifying that we essentially rely upon his laziness and incompetence for our well-being and survival...

Banking regs were thanks to Paul Martin and his Deep State Brahmins who blocked the bank mergers in the late 90s. That was a hugely consequential decision that saved our keisters. Harper was the beneficiary, though I had to laugh when his government had to nevertheless pass a stimulus bill. Maggie Thatcher would disapprove and send Steve-o to bed without his bowl of gruel.

Mostly a joke. Harper didn't blow it up like I expect PP to.
