New Canadian Politics Thread

Doug Ford with the panic shuffle already. Gotta say I'm surprised its happening this quick. Guess he didn't like getting booed at the parade.
Pretty crazy how extensive the shuffle was too. Finance, attorney general, education among the changes.

Among them, people like Lisa Macleod who have debased and humiliated themselves for the sake of being attack dogs in defense of Ford personally, as well as his unpopular policies.

Makes you wonder when the knives start coming out in that caucus for Ford. The same group turned on Patrick Brown at the drop of a hat, and I don’t imagine Ford’s any more of a canny political operator than Brown was.

Oh, good old Patrick Brown. I miss the days back when Patrick Brown was a creepy scumbag, but only the people on the bar scene in downtown Barrie knew about it. He would have been an okayish, boring Premier.

yeah, the lesson here is toe the party line, do Doug's bidding, then fall on his sword when polling craters. can't be good for morale.

The story of Brown is pretty incredible. His immediate fall and quick return to prominent politics is pretty amazing stuff.

The best part about a digital/media lynching is that it's usually over quickly, and so many people have become relatively immune to giving a **** when it happens. I'm a bit shocked though, I mean how in the **** did he end up as mayor of Brampton? Zero ties to Brampton, parachuted in as a name against an incumbent Mayor who had been a MPP for Brampton for like 2-3 terms before she won the mayors seat in 2013. Boom, new Mayor of a city he'd spent almost zero time in ever.

Timing was a big part. The Liberal purge was going on (re: Jeffery). Also, that guy knows how to campaign like a machine.

Love his personal crusade against Ford right now as well...

Politics in this province is in shambles. We went from the Liberals just shamelessly trying to buy every vote possible to Ford slashing like everybody's shitty uncle hoped he would.

How about something in the middle? Cons could have just came in, kept a slightly tighter hold on the purse strings, trimmed a bit of fat, picked a decent leader (extra points for female) and cruised to atleast two easy majorities.

I really wish we could have seen what a Christine Elliott government would have looked like. Not that I'm a huge fan of hers, but she'd be a helluva lot better than Dougie

I honestly didn't think Doug would be this dumb. How is there a new story about him slashing hundreds of jobs in crucial areas like healthcare like every day now? and then his answer is to brag about beer in corner stores?

i actually thought he was smart.

You might be the only one.

It kind of sucks that beer in corner stores has become the rallying cry of his critics. I mean, it makes perfect sense that it has. If you're gonna slash Legal Aid and brag about beer. But still, relaxing alcohol laws and ending Beer Store/LCBO monopolies is long overdue. And beer in corner stores is awesome.

I just hope it doesn't get reversed when he gets shit canned.

Yeah, the quasi-monopoly the Beer Store has in this province is gross.

At least with the LCBO, the profits are going back into the public coffers since it’s government owned. But the Beer Store is owned by a cartel of foreign owned and operated multinational beer companies. So how in the hell do they get to control all the beer distribution & sales in this province with no competition?

The answer, of course, is that when any past governments have made noises about opening up the market, the Beer Store has dumped a ton of money into the pockets of the governing party in the form of political contributions.

So that’s how Wynne ended up signing the corrupt-as-**** extension to the Beer Store’s monopoly that includes the BILLION DOLLAR fee for breaking the contract. I mean, where was the gun to the province’s head compelling them to sign that ridiculous deal. Were these Beer companies going to close down all their stores and stop selling their product in Ontario if we didn’t sign it?

So as much as “beer in corner stores” is a silly distraction by the PC’s from the other ridiculous shit they’re doing, it is still a change that’s long overdue in this province.

Beer in corner stores would be cool. I am generally against a quasi private corp like The Beer Store having a near monopoly.

The issue here is that this government has attempted to make it look like not being able to go to a Mac's Milk to get a beer is the most important humanitarian crisis issue in Ontario's history.

They just look like idiots. This is where populism back fires.

You just have to look at history to understand the way a party will govern. History always repeats itself and ideology runs deep. The people of Ontario just simply forgot how Conservatives roll. Now we have to deal with it for a while.

The good news for all of this is that Liberals are already incredibly relevant in the polls already..... and they don't even have a leader. They have real a chance to reclaim the proper middle -- and they probably will.

Agreed.

Yeah, this is pretty much my take too.

The beer store is the worst, no doubt. Absolutely should get rid of it completely. Ford is right about that - I'm just saying it looks pretty pathetic when set against firing thousands of people.

LCBO is pretty great, though.

I don't remember the last time I went to the beer store tbh. All the good beer is at the lcbo.
