I don’t think Trudeau is necessarily a racist just insensitive, hypocritical and prone to stretching the truth to its breaking point.
I do not think Sheer is a homophobe just because he (like quite a few Liberals) did not agree with gay marriage. He should however make his present position more clear. You don’t have to agree with something to accept and support the rights guaranteed as a legal and human right.

The same standard should stand whether you are on the politics left or the right

Well, of course Scheer isn't going to apologize for his gay marriage speech.

I guarantee that he still deeply believes in every word of that speech to this day. He just can't come out and say that because he's well aware it'd be electoral poison in this country to do so. So, the strategy he's settled on is to dodge and evade the question at every turn.

I live in this weird world where, in a year where this was widely exposed and documented, there would be a lot of questions/debate about corporate influence on government and politicians in this country.

That's pretty close to the definition of homophobia, no? When you believe that you should have rights/privileges that gay people don't, you're a homophobe.

this forum, in my view, is overwhelmingly centrist/left wing. we have what, one republican and one conservative? and I genuinely think we'd benefit from a greater diversity of opinions here.

It is one of the reasons I don't comment much in the politics -- feel like I'm always fight a lone ranger battle.
