New Canadian Politics Thread

The printing press also allowed for an explosion in bad information and bad opinions, but the giant leap forward occurred nevertheless.

I wasn't talking about people printing/posting their opinions. There's a been a vast reduction in the resources expended on quality journalistic content, whether in print or online.

This is why I think what The Athletic is doing is important. It's just sports but it shows that people will pay for quality journalism and lays bare the lie that newspapers have been killed by the internet. That's just the excuse the execs use to justify the massive layoffs they oversaw.

Yep - the adjustments are already being made, so not only are we going to end up with better journalism but also way more democratic journalism.

One thing the newspapers could do to get more people to pay would be to drop their partisan bullshit. I pay for the Globe but only for professional reasons. I would pay for the Star if it weren't such a liberal rag. They do very good work at the municipal level.

The state of Canadian political discourse in one twitter thread:

No mention, of course, that this is about Squirt stirring up memories of his dad. But, yes, I can confirm as a canoeist that he's doing it right.

Imagine this coming from that little shit's mouth:

quote-what-sets-a-canoeing-expedition-apart-is-that-it-purifies-you-more-rapidly-and-inescapably-pierre-trudeau-69-82-37.jpg

Sometimes when we are lamenting the state of official politics (probably after a few too many imbibements) we cue up video of Pierre just to remember that they used to have serious people in politics and it doesn't have to be like this.

"rally led by Christ’s Forgiveness Ministries just broke through the police barricade" is probably one of the least likely collection of words I expected to be found in any given order today.

Who in the fuck are these people?

I'm familiar with the Christian fascist shit (Chris Hedges) and all the evangelicals surrounding Toronto but who are these people?

Christians have a long history of taking the law into their own hands.

It's a big city, you're going to find a couple hundred of any extreme ideology in a city like Toronto.
