No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Seems like something WeHave would say.

I dunno, I kinda thought it was just saying rumours of his demise as a hockey player have been exaggerated that's all.

*edit* ah follow up post addressed it.

I thought he was mocking WeHave at first. I was about to give it a solid laugh reaction. Still might tbh. Undecided.

One thing I'll say though is that, cap issue aside, Tavares' production was something a lot of us expected to dip by years 5-7 of his deal, and it looks like those particular worries were unfounded.
That was always the take. Years 5-7 would be real ugly. I'm surprised how much he's still scoring.

I supported trading him at the time. He had declining nerdies and on a third line, was not really optimizing the roster when there was a clear hole on the top pair D. Turned out his declining nerdies were simply a blip, and Kyle simply picked the wrong player in Barrie. I thought Kerf may have been the prize of the trade but he never really had any sort of upside other than a vanilla useless "guy" that was just there.

If we could do it all over again, would we do it exactly the same and just... keep Kadri?

Think I probably would.

My stated preference at the time was to pass on Tavares and roll with Matthews, Nylander & Kadri up the middle.

With hindsight the case for that is even clearer. Considering that:

  • We haven’t won anything with Tavares.

  • Kadri won a Cup as a 2C while still playing on the contract we originally signed him to.

  • The salary cap stopped rising pretty much immediately after we signed Tavares.

  • Signing Tavares for $11M had the knock-on effect of increasing Marner, Matthews & Nylander’s salary demands for their second contracts.

None of that is Tavares’ fault though. He’s largely delivered on his contract about as well as could be expected and for deeper into the contract than I dared hope. Though like our home-grown kids, not once has he put the team on his back with a beastly performance in the playoffs.

I would do a lot differently with the benefit of hindsight. Anything that could ever possibly change the trajectory of chance. But that's not fair to Tavares. He delivered at least until the playoffs came around.

Tavares is ice cold right now, but the early part of the cold streak saw him hit like 5 posts and get goalied, and then fall off. He’ll be fine, the goals will come.

If/when Tavares resigns in Toronto, but it won't be for a significant discount. If I had to guess, it would still be north of $7mil/season.

It won’t be a Gio/Spezza league-minimum special, but I don’t think it’ll be as high as you’re suggesting either.

I’d guess 2-3 years for $4-5M per season.
