No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Bitter sweet honestly. Probably the contract that hurts the most so far of the big boys. But still nowhere near as bad as the Komisarek, Finger, etc. signings. So there's that.

seems like Tre handled this negotiation about as poorly as possible...

I'm really not sure why we're rushing to sign him after his best stretch of play in the NHL ever.

having said that, I'm glad we get to keep our sexy willy for another 8 years. love watching him play. just don't love what this is gonna do for mucho's next deal and our cap in general. oh well. Willy got the worst deal of the bunch the first time round anywyas.

They're paying him based on his last 37 games and ignoring the prior 521, yeah. Granted, the last 37 games should technically be weighted heavier than any batch of 37 games prior to this but still.. Frustrating. He got swindled.

Now we need to just hope he continues his significant outperformance on Marner so that at least Mitch's next contract is capped. Fuck me that's a high cap though. But knowing how Leafy this organization is, Mitch is gonna turn it on at some point, Willy will slow down, and Mitch will demand more than Nylander.

This is all going pretty much exactly as you would expect.

Nylander, the guy without the elite track record, but who we always thought had the talent for another gear, goes off for half a season and gets paid based on that. Now we hope and pray he's not just a payday hunter.

Marner is having a down year, and maybe showing just enough worrying signs to make you question whether a huge, 8 year deal is a bit risky. But he's got the track record of elite production, so one down year doesn't means shit - his demand won't come down at all and we pretty much have no choice.

Leafy as fuck.

I’m very happy that Willy is staying, and for the maximum eight years too. But goddamn is that cap number grim.

I was perusing out off-season thread out of curiosity, and just a few months ago we were mostly debating whether or not we’d have to go $9M to get it done, or if Willy would go for a “jersey number” AAV of $8.8M.

The plus is, I’ve always believed that Willy had the ability to get to the kind of level he’s played at this season. He’s also a fitness nut that’s obviously dedicated to improving every year, and this contract even though it’s long, only locks him up through his age 35 season.

So, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he consistently puts up PPG+/35+ goal seasons, and even mixes in some 100 point and 40+ goal seasons over the course of this contract. But that is what he’ll need to do in order for this contract to be worth it.

Also, hopefully we don’t have any global pandemics, world wars, meteor strikes, alien invasions, fascist coups in North America or global depressions or recessions over the course of the next decade.

And that this time, the cap does actually significantly jump up right after we’ve locked up our core guys long-term. Like was supposed last time around.

I keep seeing the 37 games argument being thrown around but Willy has been one of their top players at 5v5 and all strengths going back a well into 120 games

But only after they sign Mitch at 12+ of course.
