No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Happy to have Willy back, not happy with the negotiation tactics by Brad Treliving. At what point does Shanahan take the blame for any of this? I think he could have been had for much less in the off-season. Willy has always maintained this is home for him, glad to see him back.

I think it's pretty clear this is Shanahan's schtick.

More good news - with the even bigger investment in the top guys, it’ll be even more important for them to keep cheap talent like Cowan and Minten and not deal them away for rentals. And with the big boys ahead of them and monopolizing all the PP, they may never have the ability to get huge deals out of us, forcing them to sign for cheaper than they otherwise would’ve.

Also Tavares and his contract likely dropping in half if he stays at the end of it is going to be a big help too.

I’m not worried in the slightest about “cap hell” - it’s nonsense. But this premium on Willy was fully avoidable and that’s annoying.

If you want Marner sign him in July. DO NOT wait and wonder....That little f*cker is getting 120 points next year.

I bet they could have even met somewhere in the middle. Leafs were pretty firm on the 8s thing, but they prolly could have had him for mid to high 9s. Lebrun mentioned that Bettman's confirmation of the cap going up next year a significant amount is what shifted things the most and when Willy's camp started pushing for these crazy numbers. In other words, it's all about percentage of the cap and when Pastrnak or even Aho negotiated their contracts, the percentage of the cap was vastly different @ 11.5.

Leafs obviously could never possibly trade him or move on from him so they caved.

More silver linings - if Willy keeps up this new pace of his, it doesn’t matter what Marner’s dad wants, this will be a ceiling. The only way Marner breaks through it would be to go nuts again, in which case he’d deserve it.

Willy for 8/11.5 in 2024 > Tavares for 7/11 in 2018

Willy is 10th in all situations P/60 over the last 2 seasons. Tavares was 33rd.

Willy is 5th in his contract year, Tavares was 28th in his.

We're actually signing an elite offensive player to this amount of money, and not just a very good one.

RE: Marner. We have to be willing to put our best deal on the table on the 1st (basically, Willy's deal), and tell him take it or leave it and if he leaves it he's welcome to check around the league with other teams to see who is interested in trading and extending at his number.

We can't be put into a position of either caving to his 13+ million dollar demand or letting him walk, but he has a NMC so we're not in full control of that part of the process.

but tavares is the best UFA signing in the history of toronto

8 years from now Matthews, Marner and Nylander will be top 3 in the Leafs all time scorers, and Rielly will be 2nd for D.
