No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Toews, Lindholm, Chychrun, Ekholm. One of Kyle's duties was to replace Muzzin/find a guy that can protect the Leafs from a Brodie crater. He did not do that despite having a clear opportunity to at not that crazy of a cost. Then Tre decided that 4m on a d should be spent on Klingberg, though it's not like many great d got moved in the summer. They both have some blame there.

Tavares declining is just unfortunate timing. And Marner randomly sucking is just weird. This is all ignoring the 4th line shit but tbh the biggest issue for me is the big boys not earning their pay from a nerdie perspective like in prior years. You can't have that. You'll never win.
yeah, a bunch of us were clamoring for a Muzz replacement last year and we got the sweet spot of shared risk instead.

and don't get me wrong, McCabe has been fine for $2m this year - but he's a Holl replacement, not a Muzz/Brodie. and we need those shutdown guys.

dunno that you could foresee Brodie falling off a cliff like this but the Muzz hole still needed to be filled and has not been, by Dubie or Tre.

the one thing that stood out to me in Dom's 16 stats was how many other teams fucking play and rely upon their young players. not even guys like Lilly, pure fucking rookies getting top-4 ice time.

why the fuck do we never even try this? we seem determined to fritter away or waste whatever young talent outside the big four that we have, and it's fucking infuriating.
My guess is 90% of coaches dont trust rookies, because if they fail it looks bad on them.

I also guess that this fear is amplified in a place like Toronto. How can a rookie handle that kind of pressure? and if the rookie is bad, the stern media (morons) will tear up said coach. Best to be safe and play, checks notes....broken down old people who know where to stand.

that Tre resigned to a stupid deal...

Yeah, but in fairness to Pizza Boy (and he deserves little), it's really likely that Kyle organization (including the coach) was very heavily on the pro side of bringing Kampf back. But yeah, at the end of the day it's on Pizza Boy.

I see Pizza Boy as a board hire. Shanny may have in on the decision but I don't believe they had much appetite to continue on with nerd hockey after Dubas lack of post season success.

If they're done with nerd hockey then they should trade Marner. They can't win with this cap structure without moneyballing to fill the gaps around the core. Though I guess the NMC complicates things...

I do wonder what he would have done.. Really sounded like he was leaning strongly towards trading Willy or Marner in that final presser. Wouldn't have gotten great value for Willy but trading Marner could have been interesting.
He’d have never traded the Toronto kid signed for an extra year over the Swede that everyone in the media loves to hate. And so a Marner trade likely would’ve effectively ended both Willy and Marner’s Leaf careers, since Willy would then be the sacrificial goat.

Bunting 55.1% --- Bertuzzi 58.9% (+3.8)
Jarnkrok 52.5% --- Jarnkrok 52.8% (+0.3)

Holmberg 50.2% --- Domi 51.3% (+1.1)

Malgin 53.7% --- Holmberg 52.4% (-1.3)
Robertson 50.7% --- McMann 48.8% (-1.9)

Rielly 51.9% --- Rielly 49.8% (-2.1)
Brodie 57.4% --- Brodie 51.9% (-5.5)

Holl 53.0% --- McCabe 52.1% (-0.9)
Liljegren 54.0% --- Liljegren 55.7% (+1.7)

Sandin 57.1% --- Klingberg 41.9% (-15.2)
Giordano 56.0% --- Giordano 52.3% (-3.7)

Benn 48.9% --- Benoit 53.8% (+4.9)
Mete 39.2% --- Lagesson 45.0% (+5.8)

Ignoring the screaming red 4th line and Klingberg issues is not a great analysis.

But there's no doubt that Brodie's been an issue when it comes to the top groups' numbers. But even then I'm not sure that Mitch hasn't been just as big an issue there.
