While Phil Kessel was in Toronto, he was one of the best pure goal scorers any of us had seen in a Leaf jersey in at least a generation or two.

His career high (both as a Leaf and in general) is 37 goals in 82 games.

In his 42nd game of the season, Auston Matthews scored his 37th goal last night.

The depth is getting walloped, taking away another four goals from what the Leafs have earned in previous seasons and putting the team on fraud watch.
That’s a problem of the franchise’s own design as they found the least efficient way to light money on fire in the summer. But even the team as constructed shouldn’t be this bad because a lot of the issue is on the Core Four not being nearly as effective as usual.

He needs 13 goals in his next 7 games to do it (since the league counts the one game he missed towards the 50 games total).

It’d take an insane hot streak to do it, but we all know he’s capable of it and it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Ya I kind of forgot he missed a game. That hurts a bit for sure. Wonder what his best 7-game goal scoring stretch is.
