It really is the worst of both worlds from a narrative standpoint. Win and it's "Leafs beat the super short handed jets decimated by injury in a way no other team in the history of sports has ever been, the healthy Jets would pump them"

Lose and it's "lol Leafs, couldn't even beat the busted Jets, the healthy Jets would pump them"

while that's undoubtedly true, the Jets are considerably better than the Leafs so far this year. Haven't read any of their media but I'm sure it's exactly what you'd expect.

Meh. Their season nerdies and our nerdies after exiling Klingberg and Reaves are really similar.

Jets have gotten results better than the sum of their parts, and we've gotten results in line with ours. To put it another way, the only nerdie the Jets are elite at is PDO. They're 12th in xGF (we're 8th, 6th in the post Klingberg era) and T-8th in xGA (we're bad). Overall since firing Klingberg out of a cannon we're 11th in xG, Winnipeg is 12th.

- Higher P/60 than Willy, 4th highest on the team
- 2nd highest G/60
- 5th highest ixG
- 2nd highest rush attempts (Willy is 3rd)
- 56% GF (real goals!), 8th overall on the team
- 2.44 xGA (4th lowest among regular forwards)

and he's in the lineup on a game by game fucking basis so we can play a guy castaway by one of the worst teams of the last 20 years.

In fairness, the giveaway numbers are bad. But we're talking about trying to shave 1 giveaway per 60 minutes of 5v5 ice...a quarter of a giveaway per game from him to get him from bad to real gud at taking care of the puck. He's a clear top 6 forward now ffs.

So dumb.
 
I think there's an additional layer to it here though. It's not just ex players (I mean, how many good players have we actually lost or traded over the last bunch of years?) It's the local guys with 30 friends and family in the crowd on top of the ex players. Which is kind of a uniquely Toronto problem with roughly 20% of NHL players being from the region.
 
It's like those Leaf fans who think players playing in their debut score against the Leafs more than other teams facing a debut.

Ya - a guy I know who has worked in hockey media circles for 30 years and who has a nephew who got into some games with the leafs a few years ago says it’s a legit thing with players… all the Toronto kids get up for the leafs games, and all the non Toronto kids get jacked up with leafs hate from being forcefed leafs stuff when they were kids.
