No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

So i forgot to remember to celebrate Matthews' 40th goal properly.

With goal #40, Matthews tied Ovechkin's Age 26 end of season goal total at 339 goals. He's done it in 26 fewer games than Ovy did it, and there's 35 games left in the season for Matthews to extend his lead over Ovy by age 26.

There's even the outside chance, if Matthews can score 32 goals the rest of the way (giving him 72 on the season), that Matthews by age 26 can match Ovy's total after his age 27 season, as Ovy only scored 32 goals in his age 27 season.

Either way, with his next goal, Matthews moves past Ovy's career goals at the same age.

I still want him to level up and find a way to get more assists.

I was shocked to see that Mackinnon has 30 fucking more points than him, fucking impossible. Not to mention Kucherov doing what he's doing too. And these fuckers are doing it for less money (as of next year), in Kuch's case, $4M less, which is obscene.

Matty needs better wingers

Assists are dumb

Yeah, I'm thoroughly unconcerned about assists from a guy who pops 60-70 goals a season when healthy. It's the rarest skill set that does the most important play in the sport at the highest level. Him passing to the guy who passes to the guy who scores a goal....meh

G >> 1A >>> 2A

He doesn't pass and when he shoots, he scores 1 out of every 5 times. How the fuck is he supposed to get assists?

He performed at a 52 & 50 assist pace the previous 2 seasons. That would put him in the top ~30 in the league both years.

On top of being a generational goal scorer and a territorial monster who literally does everything (transition, faceoffs, takeaways, shot blocking, etc, etc, etc) at a high level.

I want him shooting the fucking puck every opportunity he can, not passing up shots to try to get Marner & Knies a few more tap ins a year.

Marner would pass the two ins back to Matthews anyways.

He’s a really skilled and creative playmaker. Everyone gets dazzled by the legendary goal scoring, so this gets overlooked. If he tried to set up some plays a bit more, it may open things up more, lead to better chances for everyone, and likely even more goals for himself.

make he should try....not only would he get more assists but would create more space for himself...not that he needs help in that regard...so never mind

but I think there's advantages at being more multi faceted

He's a good enough passer but I wouldn't say he has the vision of a Marner, for example. I don't know.. I don't know if I'd change much about one of the most prolific even strength scorers in the NHL.

true

I'm pretty sure the only thing that really sets a guy like McDavid or even Mackinnon or Kucherov apart from Matthews in the past few years are their:

1. PP ice time (other teams get more PPs)
2. PP production. Matthews is a good amount behind them in PP points per 60.

But in even strength p/60? It's Nate Mack, Marner and Matthews in the top 3 over the last 3 years. Then McDavid, and then... large gap. And if we do P1/60, Matthews is far ahead of everyone. So yeah, I wouldn't change much. He's obviously not the best PP guy tho and the Leafs don't get PPs to begin with so that's gonna prevent him from putting up McDavid seasons

History. Probably the most prolific, though he needs to do it 1-2 more times after this year to really cement it.

He's led the league in EV goals 5 times so far in his career (this season pending, but as long as he stays healthy it's a lock), and led the league in EV GPG 6 times. The only comparables I could find were Ovy (5 times total), Gretzky (4) and Bobby Hull (6 times).

Regular season P/60 since 2020-2021: 2.98
Playoff P/60 since 2020-2021: 1.92

Let's fix that. He has played some good teams in the playoffs so I'm not even asking for 2.98 but lets do better there.

In that same time period in the playoffs McDavid is 3.17, Drai is 3.42. And this is all 5 on 5; we already know his PP numbers don't compare. So let's get better there folks.
