I find it sorta funny that Friedman reported "the league is really rattled about all the appeals lately" and then the Leafs put out how angry they were and they gave him an unappealable #.

there was a very clear message when dubas took over that the old dudes in the league didn't like the cut of this new young guy's jib and they'd go to the league to complain about the use of our facilities in the summer, pick up every single player we put thru waivers, etc.

This is a clever bit of business by the league. Obviously they wanted to fuck the Leafs as much as possible, and give Rielly a suspension that’s wildly out of proportion with every recent established precedent.

But then they didn’t want the embarrassment of this going to an independent arbitrator and getting knocked back to 0-2 games.

So instead they give him the maximum suspension that can only be appealed as far as Gary the weasel. Which of course would be a complete waste of time.

That they didn’t even inform the Leafs or Rielly of the ruling either before leaking it to the press is the chef’s kiss.

Waiting almost until puck drop for tonight’s games to leak the news/drop the announcement was also a transparent and deliberate attempt to limit the initial blowback to the suspension.
