No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Matthews deserves the Hart more this year than the year he won it. team is weaker around him and he's every bit as good individually.

Yep. Don’t think he’ll get it though.

The last time he won the Hart, he was the first player in 10 years and only the third player in the past 25 years (along with Ovechkin & Stamkos) to score 60. Since then, McDavid & Pastrnak have knocked a bit of lustre off that accomplishment by having 64 & 61 goal seasons.

And then there’s also the 30-point gap this season between Matthews and the trio of Kucherov, McDavid & MacKinnon. So Auston’s only hope of vaulting past those guys for the Hart is probably if he cruised past 70 goals.

He needs 10 in his final... Probably 8 games to hit 70. Doubt he plays the last game.

His horrible disgusting slump of 8 goals in his last 17 games (39 goal pace) cost him 70. Too bad. Once you reach 70, it's tough to not gain serious hart consideration.

21-22 vs 23-24

Matthews --- Matthews
Marner --- Marner
Nylander --- Nylander

Tavares --- Tavares
Bunting --- Bertuzzi
Mikheyev --- Domi

Kampf --- Kampf
Engvall --- McMann
Kerfoot --- Jarnkrok

Spezza --- Holmberg
Ritchie --- Knies
Kase --- Robertson

Blackwell --- Dewar
Clifford --- Gregor
Simmonds --- Reaves

Rielly --- Rielly
Brodie --- Brodie

Muzzin --- McCabe
Giordano --- Liljegren

Lyubushkin --- Lyubushkin
Holl --- Edmundson

Liljegren --- Timmins
Sandin --- Benoit

Campbell --- Samsonov
Kallgren --- Woll
Mrazek --- Jones

10 in 9 is not really a big deal for Auston. He's done that many times.

Yeah, definitely still doable for him.

Even just six more would move him past both Ovechkin & McDavid’s career highs, which would be nice as well.

Updated Net Rating for Bubble Leafs

Forwards

McMann +2, Holmberg +0, Knies -1, Robertson -2 (-1)
Dewar -4, Kampf -10, Reaves -12, Gregor -12 (-38)

Dmen

Timmins +10, Giordano +1, Brodie -1 (+10)
Benoit -4, Edmundson -5, Lyubushkin -7 (-16)

And yeah we look at Timmins and say his top-25 Dman rating has to be a fluke small sample and all....except that there are zero other guys in the top-35 at least that aren't actually very good dmen.

he's probably not even a finalist this year, honestly.

shame but which one of Mackinnon, Kuch, McDavid are you dropping?? 30+ points is a sizeable gap in production, whatever your opinion on assists is. I believe that is the Leafs fault, not Matthews, but that is irrelevant. I'll guess he finishes 4th.

the one I'm curious to see is the Pearson voting and how that breaks down vs. the Hart

but by the definition of MVP, I don't see how Matthews isn't it.

When Hull got 86 they gave him the hart even though Wayne got over 30 more points than him. 70 goals in 2024 is special enough to be top 2 at the very least in a season like this imo.

But yeah if he doesn't get high 60s or low 70s then he's likely 4th.

Matthews +29 (#3 C, #3 All)

Nobody’s hit the 70 goal mark since 1993. And it’s only been done by eight players total in NHL history.

Whereas with McDavid, MacKinnon & Kucherov, as impressive as their point totals are, for each of them you can point to two more guys accomplishing the exact same feat in the same season.

Looks like no Mo or Mitch tonight.

It's been kind of quiet in Toronto about the leafs missing all of Marner, Rielly, Lilly, Jarnkrok, (and even Edmundson i guess).

Missing players is all everyone talks about when discussing a team like the Knights.
