No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

They did the same thing last year really. Philly Game 10 they snapped out of it.

It is a little concerning that poor starts, lack of focus, mental mistakes is a repeated story every single year.

I dunno…I’m also not overly concerned.

And I also wonder if there’s any correlation in recent history between starting hot out of the gate and winning a Cup at the end of the year.

xGF% Relative

1. Bertuzzi +13.0
2. Tavares +8.3
3. Jarnkrok +7.4
4. Minten +5.2
5. Domi +4.6
6. Nylander +4.3
7. Matthews +2.2
8. Marner +1.6
9. Knies -5.0
10. Holmberg -8.4
11. Gregor -15.3
12. Reaves -17.1
13. Kampf -18.0

1. Liljegren +5.5
2. Giordano +4.9
3. Rielly +3.5
4. Brodie -2.8
5. Klingberg -3.5
6. McCabe -9.6

The usual excuse for Kampf would be him getting super extreme tough defensive usage but that actually hasn't been true even a little bit this year so far. He's had pretty cushy usage.

Also, Matthews and Marner should be split up for now.

Any comparable to pull from the poor start last year? Some of these are just not overly good players but are there any ties to Keefe's system dragging some numbers down?
Last years under water crew after 6 games feels familiar. Shit 4th line. Holl=McCabe, Sandin= Klingberg, Muzzin (only 4 games played) instead of Brodie.

Last year xgf% after 6 games = 53.79%
This year: 51.86%

So it's a decent downtick, but similar weak spots as last year, with Brodie's "struggles" in the 6 games maybe being the largest factor for the difference. Too early to panic on him of course but something we can observe. Also I hope Knies gets better. If you tack on his 5 preseason games his possession numbers only look worse. I trust they'll get better and that it's an anomaly but it's something to observe. This is not an invitation to discuss.

That's a lot of red in the bottom 6 and tbh the top two lines could be better.

I want to see an extended run of rielly - Lilly.

We need to see if we have a long term #1 pair or if we need to go shopping for a rielly partner.

I wonder what Brodie would want on a 2 year deal to stay?

Going to be hard to get him to stay on less than a 3 yr deal imo. Someone in free agency will offer him at least something resembling the deal Gudas just signed (3yrs x 4.0)

imo we bank the cap space and go looking for a replacement. Here's shortlist of #2-3 type guys who might be available:

Hanifin
Forsling
Skjei
Pesce
Roy

Its tough to judge with the sample size. After a bad first two games they were actually really good 5v5 against Chicago, Florida and Tampa. Then last night was just ridiculous. Probably one of their worst games under Keefe.

Forsling intrigues me

Hurts to lose Muzzin and Brodie in back to back-ish years. We knew given their age this was inevidable. The hope was Sandin/Lilly could develop into top 3 guys but...

gotta try to nab a #1 type somehow. Use Brodie and Klingberg cap to pay for him.

Rielly and Lilly are keepers and so is McCabe at his caphit.

Leave room for a kid on the bottom pair.

If we can get Brodie to sign here cheaper on a retirement type deal that's great but if we can't we should be able to find a Gio-type guy for even cheaper.

Brodie would stay for sure on a cheap deal. But he isn't looking like the Brodie we know. Naturally still good, but not the dman that could not be beat for 4 years. It's still early yet though, and I think he'll likely improve as we go.

I don't know where they get a first pairing dman. If it was possible, they'd have done it in past years. Not easy for one to become available.

Top pairing Dmen Moved in recent years: Karlsson, Ekholm, Lindholm, Weegar, Burns, Hamilton, Pietrangelo, Muzzin, (other arguable: Chychrun, Hronek, Dunn, Sergachev, Faulk)

But I feel like we could feel that many of those guys were available leading up to the trades. This year feels a bit different. Calgary seems like an obvious one but they're probably a playoff team so they aren't gonna subtract. Not sure what else is out there... Could be a quiet year on the d front
