No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

The funny thing is with Rafai and Myers they are fine at the depth RD spot anyway.

They could have just signed Roy instead of OEL/Lilly/Hakanpaa, and not needed to start the year in LTIR and likely have a much better D.

OEL and Lorentz have that cup win stink experience

rifai's lefty

but yeah re-signing Lilly took them right out contention for another top ufa D.

Re-signing lilly is fine if they thought and were gonna push for him to play a major role this year. But you don't give that money to a guy that you healthy scratch day 1. I don't care how bad his preseason was. If the organization doesn't like him, sure, I get it. But they should have traded him and signed another top d if that's the case, rather than pay real money to a guy you have zero belief in.

Yeah so every which way I crunch the numbers, for me it basically comes down to the fact that we can turn Liljegren+Kampf+Jarnkrok caphits into a $5-6m caphit player. The only questions would be what caliber of $5-6m player is available and how much other stuff we would have to trade for that player.

my favorite target Boone Jenner apparently has a serious long term career threatening injury, so that option seems out.

I've read that the Kings are looking for forward depth as well as needing a RHD with Doughty out for a while, and with Byfield at C now maybe they'd be willing to sacrifice Danault (31, $5.5 x3) for that depth.

or maybe we could add a dman at that caphit level instead.

no idea what the Flames are planning but guys like Kadri, Weegar, Backlund might all be interesting.

of course the simplest thing to do would be to trade Liljegren. then when myers and mermis are sent down we'd be under the cap....even with a 24 man roster.

we'd still have to drop a forward to get under the 23 man roster limit though, but it wouldn't have anything to do with the cap at that point.

And then once that forward is dropped, then all of Patches' bonuses would fit comfortable under the cap and wouldn't count for next year.

Knies --- Matthews --- Domi
McMann --- Marner --- Nylander
Robertson --- Tavares --- Pacioretty
Holmberg --- Kampf --- Jarnkrok
(Lorentz --- Dewar --- Reaves)

Rielly --- Tanev
OEL --- McCabe
Benoit --- Hakanpaa
(Timmins)

$200k cap to spare with 1 player over the 23 man roster limit.

So dropping/moving one of those cheap bottom forwards would get us $1-1.5m under the cap, easily covering Patches' $600k bonuses.

Seems like a pretty safe bet that, if it comes to it, Treliving will solve the cap crunch by just dumping Lilly for a 3rd or 4th round pick.

He doesn’t have it in him to pull off any bold multi-player deals where he re-allocates bottom-of-the-lineup cap overspends to a single bigger ticket impact player.

Plus, he probably doesn’t see an issue with Kampfkrok’s cap hit, because he genuinely likes the players and has a lengthy history of vastly overspending on 3rd & 4th liners. It’s why the cap space wasn’t there for him to re-sign Tkachuk long-term coming out of his rookie contract. It’d been spent giving depth players multi-million AAV’s.
