No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Lebrun in today's Athletic:

Leafs and Tavares extension talks

The Toronto Maple Leafs and John Tavares’ camp, led by veteran agent Pat Brisson, have had contract discussions.

Obviously, the delicate dance here is finding a sweet spot on what a pay cut looks like from Tavares’ current $11 million AAV.

They’re not there yet, but the dialogue will continue. There’s mutual interest in continuing the relationship. Tavares is raising his family in his hometown and doesn’t want to go anywhere. But I don’t think there’s any rush to get something done, either, especially from the team’s perspective. Obviously, the Leafs have other important files, led by pending UFA Mitch Marner.

But that's just it, do you sign him to something stupid like 7.0 x 4 now?

If John's side was offering a ridiculous discount, I don't think Treliving would be able to help himself. John's team is probably looking at that Stamkos deal, the one Pavelski signed with Dallas (7.0x3, and at a lower cap number a few years back) as benchmarks for what 35-38 yr old Tavares is worth.

I would much, much rather spend that kind of money elsewhere.

Don’t mind cowen going down - he needed to earn a spot and he just didn’t - or the max pac signing, but sabotaging your fourth line like they are and giving Lilly a $3m contract only to press box him is infuriating. Some solace though in berubes history of favouring skill.

Opening Day Lineup Changes...

Bertuzzi --> Pacioretty
Jarnkrok --> Robertson
Minten --> Holmberg
Gregor --> Lorentz

Brodie --> Tanev
Klingberg --> OEL
Giordano --> Benoit
Liljegren --> Timmins

Samsonov --> Woll

Actually a pretty huge change but a bunch of it is just due to injuries / lineup choices. Holmberg was in the lineup by game 5. Jarnkrok would be in the lineup if healthy now. Lilly could easily be in for Timmins. Woll could have started game 1 last year too. etc.

and we have no idea what Berube's actually preferred lineup is yet at this point.

Real actual changes:

Bertuzzi --> Pacioretty
Gregor --> Lorentz / Dewar

Brodie --> Tanev
Klingberg --> OEL
Giordano --> Benoit / Hakanpaa

Samsonov --> Stolarz

probably best to do a comp to actual minutes played....

but that's not really accurate either. the trade deadline guys actually replaced other guys.

so really it's more like

Bertuzzi ---> Pacioretty
Gregor/Dewar ---> Lorentz (Dewar?)

Brodie/Eddy ---> Tanev
Gio/Boosh ---> OEL
Klingberg/Benoit ---> Benoit

Samsonov ---> Stolarz
Jones ---> Murray
something like that.
