No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Flames sucking asshole might be very good news. Not convinced they're as bad as they look and it's early but if they can be convinced that they have no use for Weagar by the deadline, that would be ideal. Leafs should go balls deep for that player. Just 29 and on a reasonable deal for a top pair d.

Yeah, the deal length is a concern, but the cap might be 100 million by the time the contract is a problem.

6.25 is likely a near steal in the next 3-4 years as long as he continues to provide legit top pair minutes. If it's a slight overpay in the final 3 or 4 years, I've got no issue with that. But he would need to fall off an unusual amount for that to happen tbh with the rising cap. And it's not like he'll be nearing 40 in his final years. It's more likely he ages like Brodie or Gio than Phaneuf imo. The other bit is i don't give much of a fuck about 5 years from now.

I don't really see a more obvious fit around the league. I know Kyle liked the player. Hope Tre does too considering his history with him.

Yes it's mostly a pipe dream but that doesn't mean Leafs can't try if the flames are out of the playoffs by the deadline. Hard to find anyone else around the league that may be available and it's definitely a big need.

Last time zeke identified someone like he did with Weegar he nailed the exact Muzzin trade. Just saying.

This year + Last year 5v5

Weegar (29): 89gms, 17:37, +1.4dzs%, 5gls, 27pts, 56.9xgf% (+1.9rel)
Andersson (27): 74gms, 17:29, +0.3dzs%, 8gls, 25pts, 52.1xgf% (-2.5rel)
Hanifin (26): 89gms, 17:16, +0.5dzs%, 5gls, 26pts, 54.0xgf% (+0.1rel)
Tanev (34): 73gms, 16:08, +1.9dzs%, 1gls, 10pts, 59.5xgf% (+4.9rel)
Zadorov (28): 90gms, 15:51, -2.1dzs%, 13gls, 21pts, 53.8xgf% (-0.3rel)

Dom's Net Rating had them like at this at the start of the year:

Weegar +8
Andersson +8
Hanifin +5
Tanev +3
Zadorov -2

Though I think Andersson gets his rating boosted by being on the top PP unit.

So yeah Weegar is probably the best of them and might cost the cheapest in terms of trade assets because of his contract.

I don't have a ton of feel for Treliving but given the contract you gotta assume he thinks Weegar is really good.

I'd be happy to get any of their top-4 of course. I'm kinda scared we get zadorov tho.

Tree did bring Zadorov into CGY right? and i think based on his moves, he likes "snot" players, and Zadorov has that snot good teammate smash people rep.

What are the expectations on acquisition costs?

Even taking on the entire contract with no retention and sending minimal future salary back (all expirings like Klingberg, etc), they're going to want something good in return for Weegar.

who knows?

maybe the seemingly standard 1st + 2 2nds or comparable prospect/young player value?

They've gotta be way out of the playoffs by deadline time for them to consider it. Not many teams are fully out by then, much less pretty good teams like Calgary. So if it happens I'm not sure it happens this year.

But I think it may be a decent step up from the Ekholm trade in terms of cost? Hard to know because I feel he's one of those guys that is undervalued around the league.

If Calgary starts trading those guys, that means they're going for a full rebuild, but if they want to do that, how the hell do they get rid of the Kadri and Huberdeau contracts? Hubey 4 points in 8 games and -9. Kadri 1 assist in 8 games and -10. Who touches those with all those years left even with 50% retention? I know I don't. So, if they are stuck with them, can they rebuild?

I don't think they can. They have to hold on beyond this season and try again and hope Hubey and Kadri rebound either to hold them or deal them. But if they're in last place, there's no way pending UFAs like Lindholm, Hanifin and Tanev resign, so they're for sure gone at the deadline. Those would be the targets. They're not going to trade a good dman under contract for a good price for several years, so they'll hold on to Weegar and Andersson.

But Lindholm as 3C and Hanifin as top pair D would sort of be perfect fits for us. That's almost $10m, but I'm sure retention would be part of any deal, and maybe a signed Kampf and McCabe or Kilngy go the other way as part of it.

Edit - looks like Kadri got on the board tonight and Hubey with an assist, but pretty much nothing they do will make those contracts tradeable.

are you saying if they suck then they won't do anything and just hope it gets better?

In LOF's defence, it often takes Canadian teams longer to realize a rebuild is needed than most teams

Flames could be in an extended period of suck denial.

I'm saying if they're out of the playoffs, they won't be able to trade Kadri or Huberdeau, and so if they gotta keep them then they're hoping they can turn it around next year, and if that's the plan, they're keeping Weegar too.

Only the pending UFAs will get dealt and the rest will stay put.

More than that - even if they want to start a full rebuild, they can't. Not right now with those two anchors.
