No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

More than that - even if they want to start a full rebuild, they can't. Not right now with those two anchors.
I mean a rebuild doesnt require moving on from those deals at their lowest possible value.

You can skill jump start one by moving Lindholm and some of those pretty D.

Then simply deal with Huberdri as it ages.

Trading Weegar means they're doing a full rebuild but trading Lindholm and Hanifin means they're not rebuilding?

A couple expensive veteran contracts are pretty ideal for a rebuilding group that needs to meet the cap floor, no?

.. especially if they are doing nothing to affect your ideal draft position.

yeah i agree. if they're unmoveable they're unmoveable. Even in a rebuild you have to hit the cap floor.

These long-term contracts are going to age poorly in the long run, but they shouldn't be an issue right now. This is a good team on paper and the most likely scenario is that they start playing better.

If not I'm sure anyone is available in a trade but they may be more interested in a "hockey trade" rather than futures, especially in the short term. Unless they are abysmal heading into the deadline, they make want to trade UFA's and try to reload again next year.

why would they trade younger pending FAs rather than the older players?
Because the top two contracts on the team are untradeable and have several years left on them, and no one would ever trade for them right now.

So why would they try to blow it all up rather than give those guys another year or two to rehab their value and maybe even excel again? And if you're keeping them for that reason, you're not trading your other players with term. You're just trading the UFAs that are going to leave anyway because the outlook is grim as fuck.

I literally said they will trade Lindholm, Hanifin, and Tanev if they're out of the playoff picture.

And they'll probably retool with other UFAs in the summer, and if they can't attract any, just run it back with the best they can get and see what happens for another year or two.

They're not going to be able to sign Lindholm and Hanifin.

That's the issue. They will trade the UFAs and keep the signed players.

Why is trading away Hanifin and Lindholm not "blowing it up" but trading a guy like Weegar is "blowing it up"?

Doesn't that seem backwards to you?

Yeah if they're getting rid of Hanny and Lindholm then it's gonna be a firesale at that point. They best extract as much value as they can from some of their older guys at that point.

But Weegar could be an offseason trade.

they're trying their best to sign them.

but if they don't, doesn't that make a rebuild even more likely? they're going to be a non-playoffs team for 2yrs straight and lose 2 of their best players.

Bro, how many times does it need to be said - they will be losing Hanifin and Lindholm to free agency, so they will trade them because they won't be able to resign them before the deadline.

They're going to lose two of their best players for nothing if they don't trade them.

Why would those guys want to play in Calgary, unless they're offered mega deals worth far beyond their worth, which Calgary would be stupid and thus unlikely to do if they're poised to finish in the bottom of the standings.

Why are they keeping their older guys if they trade two of their top players? They will suck absolute asshole without those two, likely for at least a few years. Why would they not trade a guy that is elite but heading into his 30s in that case? I don't get the logic with this one.

Who are you referring to?

They're keeping Hubey and Kadri because there's zero chance anyone would take them.

They're trading Lindholm and Hanifin because they will be losing them to free agency anyway.

This assumes they remain shit and don't offer Lindholm and Hanifin mega deals that they can't refuse, but if those guys aren't mercenaries and want to actually play for a contender, and live somewhere other than Calgary, I don't see why they'd sign.

This is why Nashville traded Ekholm and why LA traded Muzzin. D that were still elite but into or heading into their 30s for teams that probably aren't gonna do much in the next 2-4 years. And if Calgary loses a top 2 d and their #1c then uh... Yeah their window suddenly makes a lot less sense for keeping Weegar.

The logic is backwards here. If they keep Lindholm and Hanifin tho, then that's more reason to run it back and keep the stud Weegar.
