basically Mermis is the kind of vet that can fill in fine in a pinch, probably a perfecetly serviceable bottom pairing guy, which would be nice to have sitting on the marlies.

in contrast to a guy like Benning, who just stinks.
 
Why are we assume that a #7-8 on a non playoff team last year is probably a serviceable bottom pairing defender for a playoff team?

Why do we hate developing our own players?
 
because his numbers were decent in a bottom pair role for a very good defensive team last year. having him on the marlies would have been a nice security blanket for Brad. Obviously not high on the depth charts - looks like he was already behind Myers and Rifai, so he was #10 at best on the depth chart here. Given our penchant for wanting 10 "nhl dmen" available for the playoffs every year, it would have been nice if he skated through waivers to head brad off from wasting any assets on more shitty depth guys at the deadline.

But Utah is pretty sure he's an upgrade to their NHL roster now, so oh well.


Kokkonen-Villeneuve have been getting the shaft this year btw. But seem to be forcing their way back into the picture by performaning. I've written them off because I don't think they'll get any shot going forward, not because I don't like them.
 
in contrast, I was really hoping Benning was claimed when we waived him, because he actually is utter shit.

McCabe’s been working in the Panthers front office for over 10 years, so he’s definitely not involved with the Leafs in any capacity at this point.
 
Chester the molester is reporting that the Leafs have recalled Hildeby.

Bit of an odd choice, considering he’s been the worst of the Marlies’ three goalies. Both on the season in general and in recent games.
