No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Still would be keen on them trying to make a big splash to get a first pair D with legit offense. It would be as good as getting a forward.

Then Domi is the biggest weakness on the full healthy roster. This is not a guy you win with, and definitely not at center. He can provide some nifty sporadic offense and he has speed, and grit which he sometimes hurts us with more than the other team, but he’s not a good reliable player. I just can’t picture them getting rid of him in the first year of his deal, but they should. Or play him on the fourth line if you have a stacked healthy roster in the playoffs instead of Dewar.

First pair D, real middle six center, and that’s it.

Domi made it to the 3rd round as a #3C the year before coming here. Led his team in EV scoring too.

Also one of the best leafs in the playoffs last year. While filling in at #1C. Again led his team in EV scoring too.

We don’t have much at the marlies level and we know matthews is playing hurt. It would be dumb to let kampf be the potential #3C if matthews is out again. To upgrade kampf seems like an easier decision. Then go get another that can either be the 13 guy to replace reeves or one that upgrades the marlies and can fill in when necessary to add depth

I am also not sure JT will keep up this level of play all season.

Then he lost. And then we lost. There’s a reason he’s on like his 7th team in 9 years. He can bring some nice offense in spurts, but you can’t count on him and he’s tragic defensively and a risk to make stupid plays and take selfish penalties at the worst times.

Would be nice to see Cowan get a shot during an eventual Domi suspension and be too good to send down again.

It's pretty funny how good leafs players play during contract years. Tavares, Marner and Knies have decided to say fuck you to tree bitch and will bend him over.

Last 4yrs Paces

Marner

21-22: EV 30gls/77pts --- PP 7gls/29pts --- ALL 40gls/111pts
22-23: EV 18gls/60pts --- PP 9gls/37pts --- ALL 31gls/102pts
23-24: EV 20gls/68pts --- PP 10gls/32pts -- ALL 31gls/101pts
24-25: EV 16gls/70pts --- PP 10gls/40pts -- ALL 28gls/112pts

Tavares

21-22: EV 18gls/50pts --- PP 10gls/27pts --- ALL 28gls/79pts
22-23: EV 19gls/42pts --- PP 19gls/40pts --- ALL 37gls/82pts
23-24: EV 21gls/46pts --- PP 9gls/21pts ---- ALL 30gls/67pts

It hurts the Leafs because they are too dumb to sign these guys in the summer before their contract years.
Is this Shanahan's thing? "Wait"?

There is some evidence that the Leafs are actually good at making their offensive chances higher quality than most teams, and keeping their defensive chances lower quality than most teams. On offense that's not surprising given their elite talent, and on defense i think we would probably mostly agree that they seem to be doing a decent job preventing the most extreme high danger type chances like odd man rushes, cross crease passes, and open rebounds.

But on pure volume the Leafs just aren't controlling play enough.

you can see this most simply by looking just at shot attemps for/against, where they rank 24th. When you adjust for quality they rank 17th.

So they're doing something right in terms of playing style but they're also doing something very wrong in just not having the puck enough.

There's two caveats here which might make it ok in the end:

- injuries have been a real thing, both at the top and in the middle of the lineup. when you look at how the lines and pairs that make up our actual starting roster look, the nerdies are actually quite good. So there's some hope that the numbers will be decent when healthy.

- Berube has obviously changed the system considerably. This means definitely that the team needs to learn and adjust to the system, but also potentially that Berube might have started just with the basics and means to add more freedom and aggression to the system once he feels the basics are set. maybe. or maybe not.

I get my McMann on the 2nd line which is nice.

But he ruins by blowing up a 4th line that has finally been excellent.

Lorentz-Kampf-Dewar: 32min, 65.5xgf%, 66.6gf%

We finally have a good 4th line.

The only justification is that philly sucks and he wants to give reaves a shot in the lowest stake game possible prior to the schedule gettin a bit tougher. Also i guess he might want him to beat up Hathaway.
