No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

I get my McMann on the 2nd line which is nice.

But he ruins by blowing up a 4th line that has finally been excellent.

Lorentz-Kampf-Dewar: 32min, 65.5xgf%, 66.6gf%

We finally have a good 4th line.

The only justification is that philly sucks and he wants to give reaves a shot in the lowest stake game possible prior to the schedule gettin a bit tougher. Also i guess he might want him to beat up Hathaway.

yah I assume Reavo is in to stage a fight against Hathaway

And the best is that they scratch him to put in a fucking 40 year old who can’t play at either end and doesn’t fight, instead of Holmberg at least.

What the actual fuck is wrong with these guys?

I think some team would be interested in a Holmberg + Robertson + a prospect/marlie + pick.... especially when teams know that all leaf castaways eventually turn out and are actually pretty good.

Just show a list of the bad trades the leafs have made in the past... that'll do it.

I want a 3C and a 6/7D to move OEL in top four when an injury takes place.

you guys say that, and injuries have made a bit of a mess of things, but it sure looks to me like Berube's the one that's given Robby his first real shot at playing, and that Kampf is exclusively a 4th liner for the first time, and that Reaves is not in the healthy starting lineup (and we might have the best 4th line we've ever had when healthy).

The one healthy lineup decision that looks at all cavemanny at the moment is Benoit over a Timmins/Myers but i don't think we can pretend that that's some kind of travesty.

and again, berube's blues were a top nerdies team.

There is some evidence that the Leafs are actually good at making their offensive chances higher quality than most teams, and keeping their defensive chances lower quality than most teams. On offense that's not surprising given their elite talent, and on defense i think we would probably mostly agree that they seem to be doing a decent job preventing the most extreme high danger type chances like odd man rushes, cross crease passes, and open rebounds.

But on pure volume the Leafs just aren't controlling play enough.

you can see this most simply by looking just at shot attemps for/against, where they rank 24th. When you adjust for quality they rank 17th.

So they're doing something right in terms of playing style but they're also doing something very wrong in just not having the puck enough.

There's two caveats here which might make it ok in the end:

- injuries have been a real thing, both at the top and in the middle of the lineup. when you look at how the lines and pairs that make up our actual starting roster look, the nerdies are actually quite good. So there's some hope that the numbers will be decent when healthy.

- Berube has obviously changed the system considerably. This means definitely that the team needs to learn and adjust to the system, but also potentially that Berube might have started just with the basics and means to add more freedom and aggression to the system once he feels the basics are set. maybe. or maybe not.
the bottom six kill them on the corsi front. The third line can produce but can’t contain defensively at all. The best defensive player on that line is nick Robertson…

And the fourth line seems to do a decent job of shot suppression but they create zero offense.

Don't we already have 25 dmen? Rafai, mermis, hakanpaaaaaaaaaaa

yeah but what do you expect out of your bottom 6 really. The 3rd line is poor defensively but produces like a 2nd line. That's kind of what a 3rd line is. Meanwhile the 4th line is very good defensviely but has no offense.

Thing is the healthy version of those lines have been definite positives:

McMann-Domi-Robertson: 61.5gf%, 54.2xgf%, 53.6sf%, 53.0ff%, 51.8cf%
Lorentz-Kampf-Dewar: 63.7gf%, 66.8xgf%, 56.2sf%, 57.4ff%, 50.7cf%

heck even the reaves 4th line hasn't been bad for a 4th line:

Lorentz-Kampf-Reaves: 49.3gf%, 50.0xgf%, 52.3sf%, 48.8ff%, 49.0cf%

for now i'm going to guess that Reaves playing tonight is because of the goonery last game, and because the flyers suck. I don't think he'll be in the healthy lineup much going forward.

and of course cuz leafs, as soon as we get healthy the Patches-Tavares-Nylander line decided to fall apart and get absolutely shelled since Matthews got back in.
