No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

I think management knows this is their last shot and will (again) and make dumb decisions on depth veterans that will take spots from more useful guys.

on defense i don't know that there are more useful guys to take spots from.

I mean, hakanpaa is already that dumb depth veteran add, already in house. I hear he's trying very hard to play in the 4 Nations btw. which is hilarious.

at forward though yeah i definitely see robby getting replaced by some grit.

At some point you have to go for it

Best tandem in years, great top 4 and great top 6.

the thing that's still carrying me this year despite the mediocre nerdies is that on paper this squad is likely much better than what we had in the playoffs last year.

especially if our big 3 can stay mostly healthy - we forget that Matthews and Nylander only played in i think one game in the playoffs together, and both were likely injured still despite playing that game. But even if we ignore that they were likely playing through significant injury, the fact is that we never really had both of them at the same time. And of course we had no mcmann the whole series either. And no Tanev or OEL. or Stolarz.

Last Year Playoffs ---> This Year Hopefully (even without any adds)

Matthews/Nylander ---> Matthews
Marner ---> Marner
Bertuzzi ---> Nylander

Tavares ---> Tavares
Knies ---> Knies
Jarnkrok ---> McMann

Domi ---> Domi
Robertson ---> Robertson
Holmberg ---> Pacioretty

Kampf ---> Kampf
Dewar ---> Lorentz
Reaves/Gregor ---> Dewar/Holmberg/Reaves/prospect

Rielly ---> Rielly
McCabe ---> McCabe

Lyubushkin ---> Tanev
Edmundson---> OEL

Benoit ---> Benoit
Liljegren/Brodie ---> Timmins/Myers/Hakanpaa

Samsonov ---> Stolarz

Woll ---> Woll

those are probably significant upgrades across the board.

I know we'll have some injuries again this year but hopefully not to our best players missing half the games again.

Even if you don't like not including Matthews and Willy as full time slots in the playoffs last year, it still looks like a significant on paper improvement imo:

Matthews ---> Matthews
Marner ---> Marner
Nylander ---> Nylander

Tavares ---> Tavares
Knies ---> Knies
Bertuzzi ---> McMann

Domi ---> Domi
Robertson ---> Robertson
Jarnkrok ---> Pacioretty

Kampf ---> Kampf
Dewar ---> Lorentz
Holmberg/Reaves/Gregor ---> Dewar/Holmberg/Reaves/prospect

Rielly ---> Rielly
McCabe ---> McCabe

Lyubushkin ---> Tanev
Edmundson---> OEL

Benoit ---> Benoit
Liljegren/Brodie ---> Timmins/Myers/Hakanpaa

Samsonov ---> Stolarz

Keefes obsession with Kampf and stay at home d was infuriating.

One thing we’ve seen this year is they can get wins in tight, even games by limiting mistakes in the neutral zone and transition and getting solid goaltending - which is what they’ve been unable to do in the playoffs since time immemorial. Unfortunately though that’s been almost every win this year.

Hard to look at how terrible Lilly was. wow.

But on defense it's the fact that Benoit was actually facing top matchups for us in the playoffs that was always never good enough. Now whether it's McCabe-Tanev or OEL-Tanev as the shutdown pair it's still a massive upgrade on the shutdown pair either way.

Rielly and Boosh were good in offensive usage but is better with any of McCabe, OEL, or Tanev there with Mo instead. And might even be just as good with Hak/Myers/Timmins there.

On paper Edmundson-Lilly should have been a very good 3rd pairing but that didn't work out at all. A Benoit pairing might be just as bad but almost can't be worse. An OEL-Timmins/Myers/Hak pairing could be a big improvement there tho.
