He has a lingering injury. Health is most important. How well he is playing is kind of irrelevant. How healthy is he, and is there still a risk of aggravating it.

Are you actually representing your country? Usually you represent your country at an event sanctioned by the international body. This is just a pick up tournament in essence.

Is Matthews actually brittle? He had the wrist issue in 22-23 that he got cleaned up the following summer, but since 19-20 he's been pretty healthy.
Nobody considers Connor to be brittle and he's played 402 games over the last 6 seasons, Auston has played 385.
Looking at the other top offensive producers in the league over that time period. Total games played (avg per year...keep in mind, covid fucked 2 of these seasons)

Matthews plays hurt a lot. you can't just go by games missed alone.
when the guy is right he's out of this world, but seems like there's often something bothering him.

he does, yeah. elite talent is hell of a thing. it won't be that that holds him back from getting the goal crown one day, that's for sure. it'll be health if anything.
okay but I don't get the same impression watching Mitch or Willy for example. those two have been hurt before but I don't see them struggling with some sort of mystery ailment nearly every year.
