No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

he does, yeah. elite talent is hell of a thing. it won't be that that holds him back from getting the goal crown one day, that's for sure. it'll be health if anything.

okay but I don't get the same impression watching Mitch or Willy for example. those two have been hurt before but I don't see them struggling with some sort of mystery ailment nearly every year.

Or does the Toronto media/social media bubble just get a little more nuts when Auston isn't firing 90mph wristers around a few times a game? I mean, Mitch seems to lose his ability to skate fast quite a lot and we never chalk it up to him dealing with injuries. Willy's effort level is known as mercurial, again never chalked up to injury when he's skating a bit less. Auston doesn't fire a wrist shot into the top corner in a week though....

players are excited to play for their countries again.

hockey fans are so weird.

As much as I’d enjoy seeing our star player take part in the closest thing to a proper international best-on-best tournament he’s had a chance to play in so far in his career…I’d much rather see the Leafs go deep in the playoffs.

And when he’s been fighting a nagging injury all year and has only just in the past couple of weeks started looking closer to himself again—after taking a long layoff—him taking the 4-Nations break to rest & recover would be a lot more conducive to that goal than having him play through his injury mid-season with a team that’s not the Leafs.

You do recall that he and the team have both acknowledged this mystery nagging ailment, that he flew halfway across the world to get it treated and that he’s missed 30% of the season thus far as a result of that injury, right?

Yes.

But I also wasn't born this past September and remember the multi annual "what's wrong with Matthews" discussions here, on broader social media and in the legacy media pretty much every year since his sophomore season and the "Is Matthews injury prone" fear mongering from back then.

What if it's pretty much healed at this point, though? Certainly he's looked better for a while now through the eye test.

I just think it's funny that posters on a message board think they're qualified to diagnose treatment for an injury without even knowing what the injury is, whereas the player, his doctors, the team, and their doctors, are all okay with it?

Every player could use a few days off during the season, and every player could get hurt during the tournament ... so it that's the criteria for sitting out then just don't have the tournament.

Yeah, the thing with auston is that the issues he’s had are more chronic than acute

That said he should fuckin play in the fake tourney

actually looks like was still ok before this year. not even that old.

probably better than picking up another dewar or something.

I saw this tweet and I wondered what he was talking about.

I don't love isolating stats like this, and I'm guessing he's looking at NST data, but at least there seems to be a real data point that the leafs are doing something important at a near-elite level.

Even if we do take that data at face value and assume that it's important as a stand alone for a moment, you have to add context by discussing other chances and even non chances. Those also become goals at statistically relevant rates and teams lose tight 7 game series by 1-2 goals all the time.

- We're mediocre at preventing shot attempts, which means the opposition spends too much time in our end with possession
- We're again only mediocre at preventing shots on net
- We're actually below average at preventing all type scoring chances. Imo this makes us very goalie reliant against good teams, who have good players that don't need to necessarily score off of rebounds and can pick corners from 25 ft out when given time and space...which we appear to give up
- But yeah...we're way better at preventing high danger chances, which coupled with the rest suggests to me that we're parking the bus as a team strategy. Less space given up in high danger areas to be exploited, more bodies in that space to block shots.

Even if the bottom bit is the most important, I don't think all of it together as a package adds up to being more than just a "good" defensive team and we appear to sacrifice a lot of offence just to be a good defensive team. If we were generating hyper elite defensive results with this strategy, I'd probably just shrug and hope that the new approach brought more playoff wins, but it's not and we look pretty fucking weak imo and reliant on healthy Stolarz being a playoff stud or pretty okay but just pretty okay Woll catching a weirdo heater.
