No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Berube is cutting a lot of them off at the nuts with this system

For all Rielly's warts when you take away his biggest asset and don't allow him to roam you may as well give him third line duty

the answer might be to not have one of if not the lowest skill bluelines in hockey and not have useless 3rd and 4th lines.

one thing they do have too much talent for is an average power play though

The 3rd line shouldn't be useless. We easily have enough skill up front to run 3 above average skill lines. We also have the recently turned 25 yr old leading goal scorer in the AHL rotting away on bus rides for some fucking reason.

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Robertson-Tavares-Nylander
MaxPac-Domi-McMann
Steeves-Holmberg/Kampf-Dewar/Lorentz

Is not a skill challenged lineup at all

5v5 offense (goals per 60)

1. WSH 2.87
8. VGK 2.60
16. TOR 2.41
24. SJS 2.22
32. NSH 1.91

So the avg is about 2.4, "good" is about 0.2 above that, "bad" is about 0.2 below it, and best and worst are about 0.5 above and below.

How the Leafs done offensively line combo by line combo:

Knies-Matthews-Marner (294min): 3.82gf/60
Patches-Tavares-Nylander (156min): 3.55
McMann-Domi-Robertson (125min): 3.93
Lorentz-Kampf-Reaves (99min): 1.19

Those are our most used lines, and if you do some rough math you can see even with that unproductive 4th line getting 7-8mpg that would still be a top offensive team when healthy, with 3 lines averaging pretty much a full goal more per 60 than even the best team in the league. In particular the 3rd line has been extremely productive when together.

But that doesn't even seem to be our 4th line when healthy, with both Dewar and Holmberg favored over Reaves in the rare event we're actually healthy.

Lorentz-Kampf-Dewar (49min): 2.46
Lorentz-Dewar-Reaves (48min): 1.17

Those are the only 4th line combos with at least 30min. Not surprising to see the line quite productive for a 4th line when reaves isn't on it.

The issue does seem to have a lot with injuries, because many of the other most used combos bave been productive too:

McMann-Domi-Nylander (82min): 4.96
McMann-Tavares-Marner (62min): 4.65
Pacioretty-Tavares-Marner (51min): 3.66
Knies-Tavares-Nylander (48min): 2.47
Knies-Matthews-Nylander (45min): 2.67
McMann-Matthews-Marner (44min): 1.45
Nylander-Matthews-Marner (44min): 4.16
Knies-Domi-Marner (40min): 0.00
McMann-Tavares-Nylander (40min): 3.10

Only 4 of our 15 most used combos are even below average offensively (tho all 4 are awful), and the majority of them are actually elite compared to the league.

The production deteriorates the fewer minutes the combos have together tho:

Knies-Tavares-Marner (33min): 0.00
Patches-Holmberg-Robby (31min): 2.03
Knies-Kampf-Nylander (31min): 3.62
Holmberg-Tavares-Marner (31min): 6.10
Knies-Domi-Nylander (31min): 3.84
McMann-Holmberg-Nylander (29min): 2.06
Knies-Holmberg-Nylander (29min): 0.00
Lorentz-Minten-Robertson (28min): 4.48
Domi-Holmberg-Nylander (24min): 2.38
Lorentz-Dewar-Steeves (23min): 0.00
McMann-Holmberg-Robby (22min): 0.00
Lorentz-Kampf-Holmberg (22min): 0.00
Patches-Tavares-Robby (22min): 2.66
Domi-Tavares-Nylander (22min): 2.90
Nylander-Tavares-Marner (20min): 5.74
McMann-Holmberg-Domi (20min): 0.00
Robby-Holmberg-Nylander (20min): 0.00

And then beyond that there's another 50 or so combos between 5 and 20min and only q3 of them have scored a goal.

And yes, it is very unusual for a team to have so many minutes spread around to so mNy different combos.

Now this isnt just a health thing - it's also cuz coach comes up with some weird line combos when injuries hit.

But still, bottom line is that the healthy-lineup players have produced enough to make us a very good offensive team, remembering that WSH leads the league at 2.87gf/60, vgk is 8th at 2.60 and we're 16th at 2.41:

Matthews 3.20
Marner 3.24
Knies 2.69

Tavares 3.08
Nylander 2.91
Pacioretty 2.59

Domi 2.76
McMann 3.23
Robertson 2.09

Kampf 1.53
Lorentz 1.83
Holmberg 1.07

The big dumb was falling for the panic and moving Domi off of C.

The other dumb was sticking McMann with M&M as if they needed the help more than the 2nd or 3rd line did.
