No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

the elephant in the room as we approach the deadline is the precipitous decline of Morgan Rielly.

barring something miraculous here, he's a 3rd pairing dman on a serious team.

the Leafs need somebody back there they can trust with real minutes who can also generate offence. probably as badly as they do a competent 2 way centre.

I'm not sure they have the assets to get both of those upgrades. I guess if I had to pick one, I'm taking the centre, which would have a domino effect on the lineup probably outweighing the impact of any blueline puckmover we could realistically get.

What assets do we have?

been saying this for over a year. I think another failed season and we finally get to see major roster changes. Can’t keep bringing them all back expecting change. I saw Rumors that were close to signing Tavares 3x7? Why?

Marner, Tavares and Reilly out would be a significant change,

that's a bit hyperbolic.

he's not playing like a top pair dman this year but he's much much better than a scrub 3rd pair dman.

also he was playing very well leading into the break and looking more like Playoffs Mo.

A stat like Net Rating has our defense slotted in around these league ranks right now:

Tanev #15-30
McCabe #30-50
OEL #40-60
Rielly #60-90

so four comfortably top-4 dmen and actually top-3 dmen performance wise. Mo is still solid 2nd pair quality even without the benefit of being forecast for top unit PP time anymore.

(and the guy whose net rating i'd be most skeptical of here is actually OEL's, not Mo's.)

but obviously we're still missing a legit #1 type dman.

This doesn't have to be fatal except that in our case our bottom pair is pretty poor too. Hard to see how we can have both those weaknesses and win a cup.

it would be really good if we could add a legit top-4 type dman to kick one of benoit/timmins out of the lineup and let us ice a 5th top-4 quality dman to carry the bottom pairing.

but i expect they'll just add a good bottom pairing type - which tbh will probably be an upgrade over Benoit/Timmins still, but i don't know that it'll be enough of an upgrade.

The cost would be too high for Marchand from the Bruins.... for that price you could probably get someone younger and maybe some term.

Father time has caught up with ratface

So we want an old, slow D from a bad team that can't move the puck. What a need that is!
