i just discovered that there is a group of people who think the overexposure to UV rays causing skin cancer is all a giant conspiracy from big sunscreen and i just want off this planet now.

so I know your comment is tongue in cheek but a lot of sunscreens are actually extremely harmful for the environment.
the chemicals commonly used in sunscreen wreak fucking havoc on reef ecosystems. I've gone diving places where they will only let you wear reef safe sunscreen if you want to dive (which I support and I only wear reef safe sunscreen anyways but it's fucking expensive).

OK but they're not saying hey, let's make sunscreen better for the environment (good idea). They're saying skin cancer is not caused by UV rays at all, it's caused by use of sunscreen and no one should ever use it. They think it's a government conspiracy.

Ya no doubt you want to be aware of what's in it. I'm not under the impression that the giant corporations that make some of this shit care much about our health or the environment. I was just pointing out that this particular conspiracy theory has been baking for a while - not only does the sun not give you cancer, the thing that's supposed to protect you from the sun is actually causing the cancer everyone thinks is from the sun!
