OT: American Politics

It’s always easy to pick out the people that know jack shit about history.

In the grand scope of human history, every empire, superpower and system of government has eventually fallen. And the United States and its 248-year run is barely a momentary blip on the historical record.

Especially when you take into consideration the country ripped itself apart in a bloody civil war less than 100 years into its history and after being roughly stitched back together, has never healed in the 160-odd years since. And that full US democracy with universal suffrage is even younger, as a 20th century innovation.

But like countless oblivious, short-sighted dumbfucks throughout history, LOF thinks that because the tottering edifice he lives in has stood for his whole life, it’s special and unique and unlike all the others that have been built before it in human history, is immune to collapse.
Is there a reason for such a personal attack just because you disagree with me?

elections have consequences. the first US election to explicitly run on the president being immune from the law will have more serious ones than usual.

for example, your last two gop presidents have taken good economies and turned them into global economic disasters that changed the world.

yeah i guess you haven't been following this thread at all if you thought that.

regardless, a kid standing there telling me "see, i TOLD you i could eat my own poop" isn't exactly a reassuring thing to hear.
I stopped coming into this thread months ago. It’s way too much. I just dropped in yesterday and all I saw was the same stuff I saw the last time I was here.

The biggest success predictor is parents that stay married maybe because two parents are better than less than two for the kids and because it’s hard to manage a family with one person to not only manage a household but also bring home the bacon.

Maybe the left should give up on the fantasy that all family structures are equally beneficial to society.

Rich kids of divorce do much much better than poor kids from "solid" marriages.

You do this thing where you condescend to everyone, and then get upset when treated the same way.
Sorry, I missed the part where I cussed everybody out while I only said that you guys haven’t exactly been great about predicting the future, and that maybe you don’t know everything about a country that you pass through for a week every few years.

the US has never elected someone who explicitly ran on being above the law before now. this is something brand new. and he's already proven that he will act on that power.

Scotus is already a maga majority, but within 2yrs the two old non-trump conservatives will retire and it will have a generational maga majority, all appointed by trump.

He has all of congress now, and his caucus isn't divided in the least - they are 100% maga, senate and house. Moreover, if any of them even has thoughts of standing up to trump, they know their career is over the next election.

He has surrounded himself at the highest levels with not only just yes men, but yes sir and more men. And they are immediately getting to work on getting rid of every possible regulatory obstacle in his way, and they have the votes to do it.

At the state level, conservative majorities now know they will be free to do anything they can to ensure gop majorities going forward, with an eager scotus backing them up.

And of course, when anything bad does happen as a result of his policies, he has a pliant and subservient media and social media that will ensure that everyone will blame the deep state, globalists, and immigrants for sabotaging golden donnie's new golden era......and to boot he's already made the more traditional media bend the knee too.

your mistake is not realizing how fragile and tenuous democracy and the rule of law are. they aren't natural states. they need to be fought for every day. they cannot withstand a concerted attack from within.
Good but depressing summary

Assumes generational wealth is a significant factor in a significant number of families outside of the one percenters. For some it’s huge but for most it’s not.

I'm not assuming, it's a well studied fact.

The left has always preferred that the systemic racism, poverty and over policing of black america go away. The issues are deeply linked. It's not the simple matter of personal morality that the right wants it to be.

Want divorce rates to go down? Promote economic equality.

yeah like i said, you don;'t even realize you're doing it.

And you're still saying BS about our "predictions".

Brother, where have you been when I needed you?

So everyone in this thread celebrating a Kamala landslide victory for the last several months, including within the last 24 hours, now have more predictions to peddle?

I told you all that people aren’t happy with the way things are going in the country, and in my city. But a bunch of Canadians living in Canada knew better. Lost in the national coverage is LA voting out its shitty DA and voting in a new DA that actually thinks crime should be punished. Maybe we had one too many daily home invasions, I don’t know.

Unfortunately, Kamala was a know nothing pretender, literally couldn’t articulate one policy if she wasn’t reading off a teleprompter, and left a lot to be desired. She didn’t get even 1% of the vote in the dem primaries, but was expected to get half the country to rush out to vote for her in the general election? You all drank the kool aid poured into your cups by Hollywood and CNN. That’s just not the reality here, and it has nothing to do with racism or chauvinism.

The Israel issue was also a big deal. Almost every Jew I know had zero faith or belief that she was going to be good for Israel. Almost every staunch democrat Jewish voter I know went with Trump this time just for that one issue alone.

I also don’t think anyone trusted her and Walz with the economy. That unrealized capital gains tax she wanted put shivers down the spines here, not just because of its own potential disastrous impact, but what else might be coming from them next.

Is a lunatic entering office now? Most definitely. But I’m both a believer that nothing really ever changes, and an optimist who thinks that everything will be okay. All these predictions here betting against America because of this election will be wrong. As Buffett always says, he would never bet against the US and never has. I’m sure it’ll be four years of attempted impeachments and such, and lots of crazy controversial nonsense that will come out of his mouth, but in the end, maybe some policies that come out of it will be good. And in four years, we’ll do it all over again.

I find this fascinating...the Arabs and the Jews both thought Harris would be bad for them? There was a real movement by normally left voters on social media to not vote for Harris because that would be being party to a genocide and the Arab voters seemed to follow through.

That's what happens when you unsuccessfully straddle both sides of a conflict.
