My favourite macabre outcome of this election. A full on anti democrat, pro palestine protest vote that is going to play a role in Gaza probably getting bulldozed because they don't grasp that restraining Israel even a little bit is all that the current system is capable of doing.

Exactly. Most empires throughout history have a shelf life of about 250 years and the US is almost out of time. And what inevitably kills all empires is that at some point, they become fat and happy, they stop doing the hard work, they raise generation after generation of mediocre people who have no appetite for challenge and no idea as to how to fight through adversity. They fetishize consumption and excess. Even ancient Rome, near the end, had actual "celebrity chefs", if you can imagine.

Eventually these empires crumble under the weight of their own hubris.

American exceptionalism is a myth. They were never exceptional. They were just lucky. And now their luck has run out.

With all of the ups and downs that came with it, Post WWII US leadership ushered in the most prosperous and peaceful era in human history.

The US abdicating that role in exchange for base protectionism will produce a bunch of very predictable outcomes domestically and internationally. I mean, how long does this "peaceful" movement put up with countries telling them no on things they regard as in their national interest? The US got told "no" very little over the last 80 years because of the amount of soft power they wield. Remove the soft power incentive and it's either get used to being told no by nations not seeing the upside in getting along just for the sake of maintaining the relationship, or replace the soft power with hard power to get your way.

I mean, we've laughed the last few years as we've watched the BRICS group try to work around the American financial order. But the Europeans could do it in a couple of months if relations get to that point.
