This guy. Seriously,
How could we even stop them if they decided to roll tanks and just push across the border. He’s kookydooks. It would be the ultimate flex.

On the pessimistic side of things:

  • Aside from nuclear deterrence, there is no country on earth that could successfully defend against a full, conventional military invasion by the United States, and we are no exception. We could not stop them.

  • There’s a good chance that aside from some limp-dick, ineffectual mewing, we’ll get no help from the US Democratic opposition to Trump.

  • Likewise, we can expect no military intervention from our Commonwealth or NATO allies. Not when that’d mean taking on the US, and not when a bunch of those countries have ascendant neo-Fascist movements of their own.

On the “optimistic” side of things:

  • In the past 120 years or so, anytime the US has conquered and then tried to hold foreign territory against the local population’s will, they’ve eventually cleared out and run back home with their noses bloody and their tails between their legs. And a Canadian insurgency would have the unprecedented ability to carry out attacks on the American homeland.

  • If Trump orders a straight-up, unprovoked imperial war of conquest against a peaceful neighbour & ally, there’s a non-zero chance that might be the tipping point to push the US into civil war. Both within the US military itself and among the wider population.

  • Beyond all the bullying, tough talk & threats, it’s worth remembering that Trump is a complete fucking pisspants, crybaby, butter-soft wimp. And he’s a profoundly lazy conman who’s perfectly happy substituting an imaginary victory for a real one, as long as his base buys it. As this whole tarrifs episode with Canada & Mexico demonstrated again.
