This is so transparent, even to someone who doesn't really understand what GDP is. But if you understand what GDP is, claiming that you're going to report GDP without including government spending is like telling your doctor that you now report your body weight without including your arms and legs. Look Doc, I'm down 90 pounds!
 
Like I said, they don’t realize how massive direct, indirect and induced impact is of government spending. It will show up in the other facets of GDP.

Edit: And that has no bearing whatsoever on their idiotic trade policy.

The most fucked up fundamental thing here is that GDP is a pretty bad tool if you're looking for a single measure of economic health, but not for the reasons they're trying to sideline it. GDP doesn't have a human wellness component to it among other famous wellnesses (the somewhat famous joke about 2 economists taking turns paying each other $100 to kick each other in the nuts to increase GDP is awesome) but these guys just want to hide government spending so they can steal more from the public purse without anyone noticing.

Gonna be hard to hide the indirect effects of turfing 100k people and not giving out billions in contracts with the private sector.

They want the land Putin seized by conquest to be officially recognized as Russia by the rump Ukrainian state and Europe.

Then arbitrarily seizing land from your neighbours by force or by decree becomes normalized and approved.

If you’re Trump, you can start thinking about landing a detachment of troops in Greenland’s capital and declaring it as US territory. Or posting a re-drawn map of the US/Canada border on Truth Social and declaring that to be the new border. And if Canada objects, move US forces in to protect “US territory”.

But it’s ok, it’s the approved way of doing business in a world order lead by authoritarian absolute monarchs like Putin, Xi & Trump.
