OT: American Politics

Isn't he just trying to save his own skin from internals?

My guess is that this is about legacy. Sentiment, not calculation. Putin sees himself as another in the line of Soviet leaders, believes that the collapse of the USSR was a catastrophe and that every effort should be taken to rewind that.

He's forcing the west to stop him and if we don't, he's going to take everything that isn't in Nato that he can.

That makes sense.

Wonder why he never tried this when trump was president.

I just don't see the end goal here. Is he really going to take over these countries by force and make them pledge fealty and then pretend to be Soviets going forward?

It's never going to happen, most people want to live in their own country, especially having escaped repressive regimes in the past. Russia surely can't be interested in spending years fighting door-to-door.

He may be trying to capture the government leaders, so they should be evacuated.

But what is the end game? The United Nations has got to be willing to stand up with crippling sanctions and if need be, boots on the ground eventually. Otherwise this could go on indefinitely and eventually it'll be China's turn.

A dash of desperation and a pinch of psycho.
