That is what I mean. Why not do this when USA is an ally or at worst neutral?

That comes back to the question as to what he thinks he's getting out of this?

He didn't have anything to gain then or now, which makes the explanation.....desperation? Crazy?
 
Maybe he was happy to play make-believe when he had a puppet government in Ukraine, just like he has a puppet in Belarus. Trying to get as many puppet governments in his pocket as possible to "re-create" the glory of the Soviet Union.

The problem is that the people aren't interested, not even in Belarus. No one wants to play this game.

Sadly, it does seem like the Crimea was Sudetenland all over again.

Crimea and the two statelets are exceptions. Belarus is definitely not a sure thing, and Ukraine was basically lost after 2014. And now the Kazakhs, I doubt that story is over.
 
The only results I can see are that he wins an unwinnable game played with a losing hand, or the oligarchs and/or Russian people remove him from power.
