I think there's nothing wrong with parents teaching their kids things that will keep them safer (obviously) but it seems people offer up these while arguing against the implementation of sensible laws rather than in addition to and that doesn't make any sense to me.

The best thing that anyone can do to give their kids their best chance of survival is to move them out of the United States and into a country with actual gun control. These so-called "survival skills" you're touting are reminiscent of the "duck and cover" campaign back in the 50's which tried to allay people's fear of nuclear war by instructing schoolchildren to get under their desks when the sirens went off. Bullshit "solutions" to a problem in desperate need of legislation. All the shooter would need to do is pump a round or two through that classroom door or the window in that door and everyone inside still dies. They aren't surviving a goddamn thing.

The usual response I've heard to that is to have one entrance and let the other doors exit - some of these high school campuses are pretty massive - not sure how realistic that is.

yeah, there's nothing wrong with a simple suggestion. even if the US implemented strict gun control laws tomorrow (spoiler alert: they won't), everybody already has 3 or 4 Bazookas in the closet. This problem will take decades to resolve.
