OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

So it seems to have hit my wife's brother's family pretty good. Ten plus so far with it. Not one serious concerning symptom yet though. Everyone of them are vaxxed up good.

All these anti-vaxxers better pray it goes as easy on them.

Last night our daughter woke up crying saying she couldn't breathe. She had a definite croup cough. Telehealth talked us off the ledge. Scary shit at 4 in the morning. She is completely herself today, no bark, and no other symptoms. Rapid tests say nah but who knows?

Early data showing it's just about as bad as previous variants for the unvaxxed. I keep reading a lot of "I'm not scared, it's a mild variant" comments and I think people are realllllllly jumping the gun on that. The vaxxed getting infected at high rates are simply pumping the severity data to look way better than reality. This is giving the antivaxxers a lot of comfort.. LOL. It's staring them right in the face. A variant with significant immune escape appearing has been a fantastic case study to show how great the vaccines are at blunting serious illness.

Will be interesting to see age adjusted vaxxed vs unvaxxed hospitalization rates here and in the UK when this is all said and done.

My thoughts exactly.

Sorry your family's sick but go vaccines.

We're up to 5,700 cases with... 16% positivity.

I also just got an email from my former director at uni requesting absolutely anyone who has lab experience to sign up to help with PCR tests. Medical Laboratory Professionals' Association of Ont trying to urge gov't to limit who can get PCR tests.

Good friend has it. Combo of flu / cold symptoms but says Advil cold and flu manages it fine.
you seem to have a lot of friends with covid right now. but good news for sure that symptoms seem to be trending more flu like and less SARS like

I attacked Trump relentlessly so it's only fair to acknowledge that this dude legitimately hasn't been any better outside of his messaging and lack of minimizing. That's really the only thing he has over Trump's response.

I think Quebec is also trying to limit or at least strongly suggesting limiting who should get tested.

he's really doing his best to make the 'sleepy Joe' nickname seem appropriate with his pandemic response

Hopefully people listen.

But I wonder if this is public stance mostly because they thought they'd win by any means necessary in 2020 and now they're realizing it's going to be their voters dying.

Yeah I don't trust his motives at all.. And tbh I thought it was a mistake to not pump up his vaccine accomplishments last year. It was the one thing that he showed the right amount of urgency on (infinitely more urgency than we've seen out of Biden on anything covid-related) and it was maybe the only thing he did that was somewhat brag-worthy. Yet he never really bragged about it... Till now. Better late than never I guess. If it convinces more people to trust vaccines then idc what his motives are.

Another dataset showing 50-70% less likely to be hospitalized: https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19...ooster-jabs-waning-for-some-says-ukhsa-125030

Similar results to everywhere really and can still be explained mostly by prior immunity/vaccines blunting the severity.

And the bit I was worried about (and reason I'm not rushing to get boosted):

Analysis by the agency, which was formerly called Public Health England, also shows that the effect of the booster dose in protecting against the variant is already beginning to wane in some people.

It shows that 10 weeks after the booster the effect in preventing symptomatic disease dropped by 15 to 25%.

So if our starting point is ~70% effectiveness, we're looking at somewhere in the 50's after 2 and a half months. Seems in line with rate of waning on 2 doses, though we're starting at a much lower level on omicron here. Israel going for dose #4 makes all the more sense.
