OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Think I heard City of Toronto’s keeping masks for their employees. Which I’m thankful for. I’d rather be masked than critically short staffed.

The unfortunate part of this tweet is the implication that we can control omicron at this stage without sacrificing a lot (and even then it may not be possible). Not sure I agree with this narrative that we can somehow get infections down to near 0 without drastic military-style enforcement. But they're right that "living with the virus" and "going back to normal" at the same time is impossible. You can pretend I guess, and all the power to you if you have a great imagination, but no it's not "normal "

Shitty situation especially now that our "lulls" in transmission are higher than our peaks in prior waves. It's great that deaths are down thanks to omicron and vaccines, at least for younger folks, but the pandemic is unfortunately a mass disabling event at this stage.

This won't be over until:

1. We get next gen variant-proof vaccines (might take 1-2 years). Or even vaccines specifically designed to optimally fight infection as we learn more about what works and what doesn't with our immune systems fighting covid.

2. We get intranasal vaccines that provide near sterilizing immunity (best case could be next year, worst case could be several years; they're difficult to make but one in particular seems intriguing and if that's a go I think early 2023 is possible. If not, back to the drawing board). This is the bit that would crush transmission. We need buy-in from everyone but even if we don't get it, topping off with a spray up the nose individually should have robust protection.

3. More, widely available treatments/drug cocktails. Something we can all take that is proven to prevent not only hospitalizations but also long covid.

4. Treatments for long covid. A lot of that damage is gonna be permanent as we've seen from SARS survivors but even if the lifespan of these folks is shortened we want to make things a lot more comfortable for them. They are living in hell currently.
