OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

but it still offers some protection, no?
It does against infection for a month or two but your protection vs severe disease is already there. The third dose was wise and made sense tho. Fourth after 3-4 months? Prolly only the vulnerable will be strongly recommended till we get omicron vaxxes.

The danger of over boosting with the Wuhan Vax is immune imprinting. Your immune system will be imprinted with Wuhan antibodies if you're constantly exposed to that spike so it won't necessarily be perfectly catered to fight off omi and other future variants. But if you're infected a couple times with omi, or vaxxed a couple times with omi you should be able to undue that effect eventually. It's just a lot harder if we're Gigavaxxing with the OG strain.

An omicron vax will broaden your immune response. And to those not infected by omi, we may need 2 doses to get an adequate response because of the imprinting from the Wuhan flu. If we keep boosting with Wuhan more may be required. We've seen some early studies that immunity post omi infection from those boosted isn't that good vs omicron. That's likely a result of the imprinting.

Disclaimer: none of this is from me. My brother gave me this speech and I've seen it from other nerds as well.

Yeah delta is gone. And the deltacron variants didn't really take off so we're just seeing omicron spinoffs for now. Another one seems to be outcompeting BA.2 but it's unlikely to cause more severe disease. Think it's a BA.1/BA.2 recombinant so little reason to be any more dangerous. Just maybe more transmissible.

Pifzer and moderna just need to switch to omi vaxxes for now. Eventually we can hope for something more variant proof or ideally intranasals to boost with every 3-6 months to give that mucosal immunity you get from infection and lack from current vaccines.

Thank you. I have a dinner party coming up and I want to sound smart.

how is the progress on omni vaccines doing?

and what is up with novavax ?

Preliminary data coming on omi vaccines by this month for Pfizer. I wouldn't expect rollout before late summer/early fall. I don't think Pfizer is going all-in on manufacturing omi vaccines yet so supply is likely to be light initially. But tldr: since many folks were already infected with omicron they're likely to only "need" 1 dose. For the rest of us, 2 is probably likely.

Novavax is here. Canada has supply. If you want it for your fourth dose (if eligible) I believe you can request it.

What's novavax's omicron coverage like

I'd wait for omi boosters. The data on novavax is all lab-based. Haven't seen any real world data yet against omicron with it comes to VE or durability. It's possibly better than mRNA but hard to say for sure without the data.

I’m guessing but Wait for Omi specific vax (unless you’re a high risk hombre)

Relevant threads on how and why novavax may have broader coverage

But again, we can only guess what this means in the real world. Does it mean 80% after 1 month? What about after 3 or 4? 🤷‍♂️ Waning seems to be quick/quicker after 4th doses with mRNA so the same could hold true with this since it's not a perfectly matched product.

Looks like we oldsters can get the 4th dose tomorrow. Not sure I'm going to do it. Another guy showed up to work today sick AF. I asked why he was here and he said he has tested negative all week. His wife and 2 kids are positive. I'm not sure how you can think you might just have a cold. Boss came in and sent him home. If I don't get this, I may start going to church. ⛪
