OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Please be true, please be true. Anecdotally this matches our daughters school experience. Most kids/teachers are back in class...

Question for the COVID experts here.

My parents are supposed to be visiting us and our 2 month old son on Saturday. Just found out my brother in-law just tested positive via a rapid test after work letting him know someone at work tested positive. He has no symptoms other than being a bit tired. He did have a sore throat on Tuesday that went away.

My parents saw him on Tuesday night for an hour. They have no symptoms.

Would you risk it if they have a negative rapid test Satruday morning before coming over? Or call the visit off? Not sure what the incubation period is like on Omni. Main concern is our son and his still developing immune system, obviously.

Oof, I'm just a fake chiropractor....I'm going to have the let the fake virologist take this one.

Fwiw, I would avoid it...but my wife and I have become shut ins again basically since omicron became a thing.

If it is not time sensitive I would defer out of an abundance of caution.

I felt fine for almost a week after Ms. wayward tested positive and tested negative until one day when I didn’t, and it came on kinda out of the blue

Expect the unexpected with this virus! I don't know, and it varies, but generally:

1. One starts being infectious ~2 days post-exposure with peak infectiousness at around the 4-5 day mark. If you know when your brother was exposed, this information may help. If your parents were exposed and infected their peak infectiousness would be the Saturday. .

2. Symptoms with omicron are felt as early as 2 days post-exposure, but on average 3-5 days. Can be longer too (this shit is random). If your parents were infected on the Tuesday it wouldn't be too crazy to think they wouldn't be symptomatic till Saturday or even Sunday.

3. Based on what I've read, it can often take at least 5 days post exposure to test positive on the rapids and sometimes longer. So I'm not sure a negative for them on Saturday would be complete confirmation of anything.

There is a wide range of possibilities but that's generally how it plays out. Do what you please with that info based on your own risk tolerance.

Yaaa, I'm thinking it's a no go. They've only met the little guy once because they're always helping out with my niece and nephew who are twin toddlers, and both are constantly sick because of daycare. So we've been avoiding it. They're anxious to see him again. But it is what it is.

Appreciate the input FI COVID team, thanks! Just needed to convince myself we weren't being overly cautious new parents.

For further context, I woke up feeling fine on day one of my symptoms. Went for a massage, then into the office. Then at some point midday, notice a tickle in my throat. Tickle got worse as the afternoon went on. Tested positive on a RAT in like two minutes, super solid line.

Congrats btw. Never let anyone think you're crazy or over-protective. It's definitely become a thing that we've noticed. Plenty of fuckers judge you for not wanting your infant or toddler to catch a novel virus with unknown future consequences without any protection.

Can it be done outside and would asking to wear an N95 mask be within comfort?

been dealing with the exact same situation. Had a 5 day rule for my parents in between seeing bros kids and us. The kid got her first shots so we loosened up and in the last two weeks she has been exposed to strep (brother in law) and COVID (brother). Both times they conveniently became sick the day after visits. Fortunately COVID already ran through my house so we are ok.

So brutal but it is what it is is right. Congrats btw.

I have no idea what is going on anymore. One of the guys at work who was off with covid was due to return but then got(along with his wife) a bout of puking for 2 days. He said he's never been that ill in his life. Crazy times.

How about this stuff, Presto?

Seems cool but it may not work on which ever new variant becomes dominant (BA.4, BA.5 XE, etc.). It's not quite variant-proof unfortunately.

If one is immunocompromised and hasn't been omicroned yet it might be wise to go for it. It works on BA.2. But it doesn't seem TOO likely that it'll work on the next one.

Overrating strep risk.

There's a nasty norovirus going around, and it's probably good to remember that the rest of the biological world didn't stop trying to kill us just because covid got good.
