OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Everybody is getting this in the next few weeks. It’s too widespread at this point. Probably a good thing to get it over with so we can enjoy the next few months at the very least.

Well this sucks balls. Protection down to ~40% on omicron+delta after 4 months. And 65% on just delta which is way worse than most expected and not too different than what we saw after just 2 shots.

The vaccines are solid but they're only gonna really protect against severe disease. Which is a miracle! But there's not much lasting power to getting boosted on symptomatic illness it seems. Makes one wonder about the real benefit of boosting longer term. Gen 2 vaccines that have broader protection and specifically rely on t-cells and fighting infection will be great once they come. Hopefully soon!

And for the folks at home, don't assume you'll just get the sniffles. That's not how it works. Wide range of symptoms are possible.

It's good to know I guess but I find these one-off tweets somewhat useless. Show me a list of symptoms in order of frequency and leave it at that.
Yeah anecdotes are useless but we've heard a lot of that here (admittedly we all like hearing the mild sniffle anecdotes, me included, so we all have less rebuttles to those; we'd never call sniffle anecdotes useless because we want to believe it's the norm! Psychology and coping mechanisms are fascinating to me and there's a lot of that with covid! Mental health >>>) and I'm just cautioning people to not think this is the cold. It's still covid. My cousin still isn't 100% either. And my brother, which granted was a delta breakthrough, is not the same person. Moral of the story: odds are great but it's still covid-19.

IFR is about 3x higher than the flu in a very best case scenario for vaxxed folks. And for children the early data says higher risk for omicron

I don't really don't want anyone to have it as bad as I found it but also... if one more person I know says pointedly "this is not as bad as people say" to me after they're twice vaxxed as if I was exaggerating... 😒
