OT: ForumIce's list of all things useful

Yeah. Just wondering if it's any good. Could be nice to have US Netflix at my finger tips, but no idea if it's reliable or if Netflix will shut it down. At the end of the day, I don't know anything about this stuff.

I've personally never heard of it, and I try to keep up on cordcutting techniques. Anyone offering a lifetime subscription strikes me as a bit dodgy. There's a lot of good guides on the internet for picking a VPN that will suit your needs. Some VPN's are better for downloading purposes and some are better for things like viewing netflix without international border restrictions (which can be tricky sometimes as Netflix has started banning VPN IP addresses...to which the VPN's just change their IP so they and netflix and go around in circles until the heat death of the universe...but it's annoying for the user in the downtime between Netflix doing the IP ban and the VPN switching IP's)

It's tough to deal with this all if you don't have a baseline knowledge of how it works.
 
Yeah, I should probably avoid it. Seems too good to be true and I have no idea how any ****ing thing works.

It's not mandatory or anything - would just be a luxury. My friend sent it to me but he wasn't sure about it either.

I'd definitely dodge this one you linked, though there is a way of doing it relatively simply. Subscribe to a VPN that has an option to pay a bit extra for a private IP (with a regular VPN subscription, you use the same IP as everyone else on the service, which is how netflix identifies the VPN...they see a shit ton of connections from the same IP address and block that IP address....if you pay for a private IP though, only you're using it...don't use this for downloading though)

The cost is a bit higher (7-10 bucks a month usually) than for regular VPN access, but it would solve that problem. The question is whether access to US Netflix is worth the extra 7-10 bucks a month more than your subscription already costs you.
 
Meh, it's not a mandatory purchase. To be honest, the ONLY reason I considered it was that I make American cash on my side job and I've had a really out of control good year. I hate converting USD to Canadian with the bank rates ****ing me over, so I've been dropping it in my RRSP but I kind of ran out of room. So I've been trying to buy as much with USD as possible.

But this TNT Stream Unblocker seems a bit sketchy for my liking (who the **** offers 93% discounts, anyway? It can't be worth even close to the $600 that it claims). So I'll pass. If I crave US Netflix in the future I'll go for it but meh, I'm fine now.
 
All this things are a work around, and they all get shut down eventually, new ones pop up. It all depends on how much mucking around one is willing to do to keep ahead of the suits. Eventually a viable legit alternative (a la Netflix) pops up, at least that's the hope.

Yeah seems like the real cost will be the time spent, not so much the money. I watch TV to be lazy. I'd rather just download illegal torrents if I really want to watch something.

I used to do all the FTA satellite stuff and whatever other cheats I could. Now I'm mostly "legit." I still download some movies and cable shows but I have a satellite subscription and Netflix. I do you a VPN to get Hulu... I have a legit subscription though. So I'm like 65% legit now. I enjoy the reliability and ease of doing it this way.

Private IP addresses through a VPN seem like a pretty steady solution for this. There's simply no way that Netflix is going to start going connection by connection looking for dodgy IP addresses. When they're seeing a ton of connections from the same IP, it's easy to find 3000 connections on the same day from the same address and know something is up.

Ya private IP VPN probably aren't worth tracking for a Netflix you're right. Can't say on long term viability, but no obvious ways to shut them down.

I don't even think Netflix would "want" to shut them down. It makes the most sense for Netflix to go after the low hanging fruit, which is just to hire a few IT muppets to chase the major VPN IP's in circles until this issue goes away.

And I doubt Netflix even "wants" to do that. I think it's to appease networks and studios since they pay for regional rights. It would be in Netflix' best interest to let people view however they want in order to retain as many customers as possible.
