OT: MLB Thread

DH keeps guys in after they can't play, there's less strategy with it, and easier to manage.

But then again, pitchers suck at hitting, the DH helps keep players around longer (a guy like Ortiz or Pujols probably would have retired before without the DH), it can help keep top players in the lineup (Donaldson or Bautista taking their DH days).

I can see the argument for both. The big flaw is that minors pretty much all use the DH so pitchers get no practice moving through the system, and the AL teams do have an edge in that they would be much more willing to sign guys like Bautista and Encarnacion. That's why people assume that the DH will come in over the next few years.

Exactly. You would have better hitting pitchers if said pitchers learned how to hit in the minors. As it is the NL is the only league in all of pro baseball that doesn't use the DH so it's no wonder that 99% of pitchers can't hit to save their lives. But few things make the game more boring than the dumbing-down DH rule. If and when the Expos come back, I realize that it makes more economic sense to have them play in the AL East along with the Jays, Bosox and Yankees but part of me wishes that they could stay in the NL just so I wouldn't have to watch AL style ball.

It only makes sense for them to be in AL East if you think they cannot survive on their own without half the tickets sold for Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays games going to the road team fans. You cannot base a team existence on the hope road fans come to watch their team.

You still want rivalries. A rivalry with Toronto and Boston which mirrors the rivalries that the Habs have with the Leafs and Bruins makes sense. It's a lot easier to sell tickets to a series against the Jays, Bosox or Yanks than it is to sell tickets to a series against the Mets, Phillies or Marlins.

Regardless, it makes sense in so many ways. US based teams cross the border less when both Canadian teams are in the same division. With these marquee teams Expos can charge premium prices for tickets more frequently.

Eh.... que?

Why would that be the only reason it makes sense?

I agree.

This is worrisome.

They should outlaw the DH in the minor leagues. The minors are supposed to be developmental in nature but how do you train someone to be a DH? They get all the "training" they'll ever need in batting practice. Nobody comes up to the majors to be a DH. The minor leagues should be developing BASEBALL PLAYERS, not just batters. Let pitchers learn how to hit in the minors. You don't need to waste roster spots on one dimensional hitters.

This series pretty much played out as expected.

The Cubs are the World Series favorite and the Giants have been one of baseball worst (perhaps even the worst) teams since the all-star break.

The 9th inning collapse by the Giants was similar to what they went through in the second half.

It depends what you like to watch. If you'd rather see guys like Ortiz, Encarnacion and Edgar Martinez mash the hell out of the ball than you probably like the DH better.

If you prefer to watch the likes of John Lackey, Anthony DeSclafani or Wei-Yin Chen struggle than you probably like having the pitcher hit instead.

That is hardly the argument but take it from you to take that simplistic view of the question.

Why couldn't Moore go one more inning? He was completely in charge of the game. As good as Bochy has been, he overthought and overmanaged that inning. Five relievers. He'd have been better off just throwing one of his all-star starters out there to pitch relief on short rest-they had enough of them. Then short rest Baumgartner for next game or whatever.

Not sure I have enough confidence in the Cubs to take out the Jays, so I was kinda hoping for Giant magic to continue. (I'm a Cards fan).Almost did. They almost won game 1 and should have had last night's.
