OT: MLB Thread

No revenue to compete with the big teams, resulting in a shitty roster, resulting in fewer fans, resulting in less revenue, the cycle goes on.

Not accounting for the fact that quebecers earn less money, and as such have even less money to throw at bad teams.

Montreal is a sports wasteland outside of the Habs, going to a few impacts games this year has proven that to me.

Passionate fans are there, but the city wide support is lacking. And this is a team in the top soccer league in Canada and the USA, top of their division.

Montreal is a crappy sports town but MLS is not a major sport, despite its name.

toronto FC will have lean times too, but with MLSE backing it up, its safe. And there always seems to be a sucker to buy the Argos.

Toronto FC were garbage last season, they had a average attendance of 26,628.

Montreal has been in the playoff race all season in 2019, average attendance of 17,118.

Compared directly to toronto last season, where the impact were fighting for the post season for the entire second half of the season... 18500.

If Montreal cannot support teams like the impact or alouettes, they will never support a MLB team or NBA team.

It would take a really dumb owner with really deep pockets to even try.

I can see TFC attendance dropping to 20,000 per game if they continue to suck. Argos have the least passionate fans in the CFL, its a miracle they are still around. But the city can always find money somewhere to keep these teams going.

TFC 20000 per game if they suck.

Impact 17 000 when they're good.

There is a reason Toronto has a MLS team, NHL team, MLB team, lacrosse team, NBA team, and CFL team while Montreal has a NHL team, struggling MLS team and a CFL team on life support.

17,000 is still the 14th best attendance in the league. Imagine... the Chicago Fire with Schweinsteiger draw less than 11.000

I don’t disagree that Montreal fans are fickle, but Saputo can easily absorb lean years for tier two pro soccer in North America.

MLB and NBA is a different ball of wax. The NBA is global, and they have ambitions that go way beyond another team in Canada.

.

Oh, I have no doubt that those two leagues look at the Montreal sports landscape and know for a fact that they won't touch it, this is more directed at people who think that Montreal could get the expos back, and as I've discovered, people who think for a second that Montreal could support a NBA team.

Another funny thing is, the Expos 'consortium' thinks they can have a competitive team with a 75m payroll. LOL
The TWINS have a 129m payroll just for example. But they will get obliterated. The attendance will be high for 1-2 years, then drop significantly. I wouldn't be surprised if there was relocation talk in year 4.

yeah the hope from fans that a 30000 stadium can work is nuts, revenue in CDN dollars, payouts in US, won't work even with league welfare

Yeah I can’t see how any business case works for an MLB team in Mtl.

Having said that, MLB is entering troubled waters..something the owners saw coming some 60-years ago with the advent of sports broadcasting on TV.

Unless they dismantle down to a 10-12 team league - will need a new business plan to prop up close to 1/3 of the franchises. Attendance is down for the 4th year in a row.

MLB stormed through the last 30-years with the “If you build it, they will come” Field of Dreams strategy - simply having a stadium is not enough because fans are not coming out to watch games like they used to.

MLB is well behind and falling more-so by the day from NBA and NFL

Yep soccer should be safe in Montreal. Adam Silver already told a Montreal consortium that Montreal is "Plan B" if an existing team needed to move. So they are on the radar, but it would take a lucky chain of events for them to get an NBA franchise. They keep getting exhibition games, so something is cooking there.

Same as quebec city getting a team if they had a arena?

Yeah, once one of those sunbelt teams goes under quebec will get a team.

I'm betting on Florida.
Not a chance, game is controlled by American owners now, they will only see Quebec’s lack of population translating to lack of disposable income, lack of corporations and lack of additional TV revenue potential (since it would be splitting the Habs TV revenue). Unless Quebec can find a Thompson type well heeled & connected billionaire....good luck with that.

There will always be a rich owner looking to buy sporting interests in major US markets.

well Buttman definitely held his nose when the Atlanta team moved to Winnipeg, and I bet he will do it again if he has to with Quebec.
