Just as Jacobs has always maintained Quebec City cannot compete in corporate $ and disposable income of US cities, it’s much the same argument for Mtl in MLB - unless Jeff Bezos finds it in his heart to fork over a couple of billion for a park + teamQuebec’s response to Covid probably didn’t help either.
Montreal is the biggest market in North America that doesn't already have an MLB franchise. Mtl was 40th amongst 30-MLB teams for over 15-years in radio & TV broadcast revenue prior to being moved to Northern VirginiaMontreal is the biggest market in North America that doesn't already have an MLB franchise. It's not comparable to Quebec City.
Here's the press release from the Bronfman group. Everything is written in the past tense and they thank everyone who was involved. It does not sound like the kind of statement one makes when they meet with a temporary set-back. There is no talk of moving to any next step. It's just a "Thanks, it was fun while it lasted" statement, which proves that Bronfman was always full of shit when he talked about this like it was a passion project. If that had ever been true he'd have put up his own money instead of trying to fleece the taxpayers.

The media landscape isn't what it was back then. You have the Jays on Sportsnet and TSN has nothing other than Sunday Night Baseball. A team in Montreal gives Bell Media 162 games worth of content to fill their schedule with. It's also a city with a metropolitan area population of over 3 million sets of eyeballs. That's more than Nashville or Charlotte or Portland can muster.Mtl was 40th amongst 30-MLB teams for over 15-years in radio & TV broadcast revenue prior to being moved to Northern Virginia
Forgot to mention Jays exclusivity broadcasting rights from brockville west …The media landscape isn't what it was back then. Bronfman already stated last year, if Mtl was in the US finding a billionaire to support a stadium & team would be easy “but it’s hard to find those types in Quebec”Here's the press release from the Bronfman group. He doesn't need to find a billionaire. He IS one. Shit, between himself and Garber they could own two teams if they want.Bronfman already stated last year, if Mtl was in the US finding a billionaire to support a stadium & team would be easy “but it’s hard to find those types in Quebec”
That can be challenged.Forgot to mention Jays exclusivity broadcasting rights from brockville west …
No he isn’t - he’s rich but he’s not wealthy…He doesn't need to find a billionaire. He IS one. Shit, between himself and Garber they could own two teams if they want.
The Panama Papers say differently.No he isn’t - he’s rich but he’s not wealthy…
I always reference this Simpson's clip when it comes to the topic of why a guy like Bronfman only wants to spend other people's money. One reason billionaires are billionaires is because they won’t put real skin in the game for a loser. Like it or not, the first go around left a mark when Bronfman Sr. stepped away.
Lawrence Stroll owns an F1 team. Saputo owns CF Montreal.
Families like Desmarais, Fortin, Bouchard, Rossy, D’Amour, Coutu etc. etc. definitely have the cake to own an MLB franchise. But they see a dog, not a star.
