OT: Movies/TV Shows

So about Stranger Things S1 @zeke - I finished it last night.

I thought some of the logic started to give way in the end, not unexpected for a fantasy/sci fi type show. But mainly, some issues that maybe you have answers to where I didn't:

Missing Will - he probably gets nabbed by the monster and dragged into upside down world when he goes missing initially, but then over the course of a week, he doesn't get immediately devoured like that poor deer did, and he's successfully hidden himself away from the monster and avoided murder like the girl who got abducted after him?

The monster seemed to just show up at the lab and Will's house and the forest where the gate (one of them) was. They suddenly established that thing about blood drawing him out. But in the last episode, he suddenly opens a portal out of nowhere at the school where the kids are hiding out, just as they needed an assist with the military guys? They said something like, oh, because of the blood, but the monster suddenly has the ability to show up in rightside up world wherever he wants?

Will gets that gross worm thing attached to his mouth and insides, and they just pull that out and give him CPR and this frail little kid survives in his weakened state with no food after a week? And then they didn't do any MRIs or anything while he's at the hospital to see that he has leftover worm in his system??

I didn't really like that the monster was just some monster. Would've been cooler if it was some guy who got stuck in upside down world in previous experiments or iterations of that government project. But there's just this one solitary monster hanging out on his own over there, that Eleven somehow frees up to enter the real world? Also, I feel like we've seen that exact monster head, opening up in four pieces, in some other tv show. Driving me crazy that I can't remember where.

Overall, still enjoyable and looking forward to S2, but I had high hopes from the first 7 episodes that these particular writers weren't going to leave these types of loose ends and inconsistencies in the end when the dust settled. Maybe I missed some detail and there were explanations for some of the above, or maybe they revisit to answer some of it in later seasons (clearly the Will worm storyline will be a focus of S2 - assuming the monster manifests through him or something).

Man that's like 6 years ago but I'll try....

....iirc Will's one skill was being good at hiding i think (literally and metaphorically)? I don't think the demogorgon got Barb right away it had to find her first.

...yeah the demogorgon was able to open up temporary gates itself. not sure exactly how that jives with the other seasons but i'll try and remember.

....i guess they didn't examine close enough? are you sure he didn't stay at the hospital for a bit? not sure it would have mattered much if they found it tho.

... the upside down is a big place that's part of all four seasons. but yeah A Quiet Place and some other movies pretty much just copied the Demogorgon.

Hmm. Was A Quiet Place where they had that same monster design? Now I can't remember that. Either way, feel like it'd have been way cooler instead of some faceless monster to have some backstory via having it be some guy they sent in to explore who got stuck and monsterized (and therefore be some zombie out for revenge rather than planthead looking to just kill indiscriminately).

Yeah, Will did stay in the hospital for a bit, that's why I was a little peeved by seeing him cough up the worm, like would they not have noticed that when presumably doing all the scans on a close to death kid? Also, that he coughed it up and was like, oh, no big deal, and went back to the table and didn't tell Wynona and Jonathan, like they weren't intimately involved in the situation and should probably know?!

They never went into what happened with Barb. I think she gets abducted at the pool, no one has any idea where she is, then Eleven goes into the makeshift bath at the school and sees that Barb's dead in upside down world, then Wynona and Cop go in and see her dead there before coming across nearby Will. So, like Will, we don't see her pulled into that world or what happens immediately afterwards, but I don't see how she or Will would've been any different than the deer that he feasted on. Later, he catches up to Will in his hideout shack and presumably then attaches the worm to him, but why did he do that rather than just eat him like the deer? Not sure what the worm thing does for the monster, but if anything gets fleshed out further, I imagine it has to be that.

I loved how the theme song was really all you needed...whole story in two minutes.
Yeah, the first time you sit through it, perhaps. After that, no one wants to sit through the same 2 minute intro and in 1969 the "skip intro" feature wasn't a thing. So many shows back then had these interminably long intros like the Beverley Hillbillies, Gilligan's Island, etc. The best thing about Better Call Saul is the brevity of it's intro.

They release like 3 marvel movies a year...what are you two on about exactly?

There's still tons of oxygen left in the room for non superhero action movies

It's the studios and their unwillingness to take financial risk on anything that isn't established and profitable IP that's the problem.

So ironic that as a kid I remember just dying for them to make ONE superhero movie. We had a bit of Superman and Batman, but zero Marvel and I was just like damn, why don’t they make a Spidey movie!? Now I’m like, for the love of all things sacred, please stop already.
Yeah, 1989 was so special even though I didn't like Batman all that much. Gone from too little to too much.

Not to mention the litany of quality stuff available online.

A few things:

- Marvel literally didn't release a single theatrical release between July 2019 & July 2021
- Since July 2021 they've released 6 movies and release no more than 4 in any calendar year.
- The DCEU hasn't released a movie in over a year (the emo/noire batman flick isn't part of any continuity) and has released a total of 11 movies in 9 years

This is silly. There's hardly a tidal wave of superhero movies being made.

Why is galadriel an angry cunt?

it's very weird because in the same city where kids are playing diorama games of her being "scourge of the orcs" back in the olden times, she still walks around with this enormous chip on her shoulder like a teenager and acts like every single thing that is said to her is some kind of disrespect and every conversation is an insult exchange where she feels she has to get the last one.

moving on from the sword vs. magic stuff with this character, I'm not really seeing this much beloved commander and leader part either.

I keep hearing terms like timeline dialation or alteration. This is something else, they're smashing events that occurred 1600 years apart into a concurrent storyline.

Late to the game but just watched Elvis...I think that was great. I hated Tom hanks, but Elvis guy is a star. An under control Baz Luhrman makes some damn good flicks
