OT: Movies/TV Shows

DC wants what Marvel had, a series of TV/movies that built up to a couple billion dollar movie events. They just couldn't get out of their own way, or find that shared vision to get them there.

Yes, but even that is a decent enough departure from the baddie needing to conquer the universe trope we've seen thousands of times. Also of note is that he defeats himself in the comics by continuously making mistakes because deep down he knew he wasn't worthy.

The MCU upgraded his motivation for the movies, which was easy enough because he was already a character with some complexity in the comics

I’m not sure that “Dude wants to commit mass murder on a galactic scale because he’s desperate to bone literal manifestation of death” is still a decent, not ridiculous backstory/central motivation for a character.

Though I can’t disagree that it at least gets points for being something other than “dude who is pure evil wants to conquer/enslave all living beings, for reasons”. Which is basically the sum total of Darkseid in the comics.

If they use that character in the DCU, they’ll need to come up with some more depth and nuance for the character, like Marvel did for Thanos.

How's that much different than any other religiously driven motivation in fiction?...aside from him actually having proof that his diety of choice exists and he wants to bone her, of course.

That’s a fair point. But villains driven by religious fanaticism are a pretty well-worn trope too, aren’t they?

And I suppose wanting to bone your deity actually isn’t that unusual either. Jesus & the Abrahamic God might not put out, but a lot of the ancient gods were notorious sluts with their followers.

Zeus fucked everything

Everything

With all of this, if you have a good storyteller, you can make wanting to bone your sister as your entire motivation in life into an interesting movie. Marvel has done a good job overall at making the villains interesting - I mean, I know it's a meme, but #thanoswasright has some legs. What they did to craft his story was miles ahead of what we've seen out of DC , or even compared to like what you get in other media like Star Wars.

Or just look at GoT. When it looked like the villains had depth and intrigue, the show was great. Then S8 came and they basically DCEU-ed it, and suddenly it's just a crazy Mad Woman and some zombies with no purpose.

Ep 4 is pretty good and sets up a very enjoyable arc.

Bonus: Ep 5 will be on Friday instead of Sunday because of the Superbowl.

Thanks for the heads up.

Thought the episode was just okay.

this new baddie lady was pretty typical boring villian. Shoots the doctor to establish she is evil! Meh.

Other than that. Great episode between Joel and Ellie. I just re played the game and I was still on edge when they sleep or go through a door.

The episode as a whole was okay, but it's more of a setup for the upcoming episode, which is fine by me.

That lady's casting is probably the first major mistake they've made in the series so far. She's supposed to be this tough, evil-esque leader, but she doesn't sound the least bit menacing. Like, oh no the secretary's mad at us, what are you going to do, throw a tantrum and threaten to go to HR? Get the actress who played Tess to do her role, on the other hand? Tess looked menacing and the type of woman you wouldn't want to fuck with. Call up Sarah Clarke and see if she's available.

Beyond that, I don't mind her character. Sometimes you just need a simplistic, evil stereotypical bad guy.

The chemistry between Joel & Ellie is great.

Watching the show definitely makes me want to replay the game, but I end up working instead.

Not relevant to ep 4 spoiler, but just for the general series: I don't know how they're going to get everything in 9 episodes instead of 12. I'd feel much more comfortable if they had 12, or shit even 10, episodes.

There's one part in particular that I'm dying to see and I'd be extremely disappointed if they cut it short.
