OT: Movies/TV Shows

I didn't think a LOF man crush could exceed his love for Kulemin or JT, but Cavill is clearly #1. Previously I thought he was just on Calle Jarnkrok's level. But this is something deeper.

Trailer looks good. Bo Burnham is very up and coming in the industry, sort of this hot commodity that gets talked about a lot among producers, but not so much yet by the general public. I’m curious to see if he ends up getting big. One of my clients is obsessed with him.

Bo is one of my called shots im more proud of….saw him doing comedy in his teens, and could tell he was destined to make some pretty great shit one day. Each stand up special got more and more inventive, played with the form in ways few people had before….and now I think he’s well on his way to being one of the great directors of his generation, if he keeps on that path.

He’s got a great eye for what’s happening underneath the surface.

He was on an episode of “The Green Room” when he was about 19 or 20….and most of the comedians seemed almost jealous of him (especially Marc Maron) but Gary Shandling was there and was riveted by him, you could tell he saw some special talent in him. (While the others were annoyed he jumped the “paying his dues” line, by carving out a name for himself on YouTube.

I'm sure it's been brought up... but give me a single reason Tom Hiddleston wouldn't be perfect?

I think just like Cavill, he’d be too expensive…..they plan to make 5+ movies with these guys, and their rates go up and up and up per flick…..

Cavill made $300k for Man of Steal…..then $20m for Justice League. (and $1m per episode by season 2 of The Witcher)

Daniel Craig made $3.5m on Quantum of Solace….then $30m per flick by the end.

So I think part of the calculus of choosing a relative unknown for Superman, Bond, etc….is you get one “cheaper” movie up front that helps you offset the risk of it bombing (relatively)….and you get an extra $50m of profit out of your first 2-3 films in the series, before having to cut $30m checks to your lead to keep the series going.

That’s purely speculative on my part tho.

Yeah, he's definitely an original. That sounds interesting. I just looked and it's on YT. Imma check it out.

I honestly doubt they’d look at it that way.

If Cavill brings a following, he makes it more likely for the movies to outperform. He’s worth the extra money there.

But again, I don’t think there’s any risk of Bond films bombing. If one disappoints, it does so by making $500m instead of $750m or whatever. And there’s also likely intense interest and curiosity from the public to see how the new Bond plays, so that should boost things initially anyway.

The Broccoli camp makes so much money off this franchise that I doubt they would go with a lesser actor to save some dough. They actually have quite a reputation for wanting to get the best guy they can, to make the film as top notch quality-wise as possible. I’ve read the Connery bio, the Roger Moore auto-bios, and books on the producers (original Broccoli and Salzman). Super interesting stuff about how they picked each Bond.

Connery basically came to the first interview dressed exactly the opposite of how he was instructed, basically like a bum, but then when he left, they saw him from the window crossing the street with a swagger that they thought captured Bond exactly, and went after him. Moore was a known young actor at the time and sort of considered, but later got famous with The Saint series and was friends with the producers and again sort of the easy clear choice (bit older than ideal) when Connery was done (major falling out, even sued the producers for huge money and settled out of court). Craig was a guy the Broccoli kids thought was just an amazing actor and so they pursued him even though he really didn’t look the part.

Anyway, all that to say that their camp has always gone with who they thought would be best for the part. And the franchise is really a cash printing press anyway so I don’t think salary will factor in.

I’m actually having dinner with a UK director tomorrow who did a client’s last film, in town to do post work on it. He told me last time that he lives in the same neighborhood as Cavill in London and sees him walking his dog frequently. I will be following up on this compelling story tomorrow.

You need only look at their entire history of hiring people…..Superman or Bond, to see thus far they’ve never hired someone of Cavill’s stature & cost, to take the lead.

nor did they think Batman could bomb prior to Batman & Robin, or Superman prior to Superman Returns…both of which killed off their franchise for quite a while.

This is a fantastic oral history of the Bond franchise never hiring someone of Henry Cavills current stature, as Bond.

Big of you to put in that time and effort to make my argument for me.

Tell you, what…$1000 Cavill won’t be ond.

If he is, I’ll email you a grand, and when he isn’t you can pay me the same.

Let’s put some money where our mouths are.

True, not a movie star on his level, though Moore and Brosnan were pretty well known lesser stars at the time of hiring.

The thing with Cavill is that he’s sort of the consensus guy that most of the public chatter seems to favor, almost exactly like Brosnan was in the 90’s. Cavill has gone on record as wanting the part badly and was severely disappointed when they chose Craig over him (citing the fact that Cavill was super young at the time). Cavil’s career has sort of plateaued with these superhero parts, as he’s not really considered for major dramatic roles, so getting the Bond role would elevate him and give him that stature and opportunity to do other, better things in the off years while he’s in his prime (because he doesn’t have that marquee star power or recognition right now).

So then, I think he’d be keen to lower his financial demands to get the part. I know his reps would 100% be advising him to do that, if he wasn’t already inclined on his own. And I don’t think the producers would be sweating over paying him $10m or whatever up front when the first film is surefire half a bill or more. The backend number will have to be fair and healthy, so he’ll clean up there anyway.

You seem to misunderstand the point of the posts often. I’m not saying they will for sure pick him. I have no idea. I’m saying he’s for sure the best choice.

Nope. It was an oral history of the producers always going with the guy they really wanted.

…and Remington Steele was more Bond that the Bond he eventually played, damn near.

We get it, you’re really into Henry Cavill.
