OT: Politics & News... Have at it.

I liked Parizeau, he was a smart man, especially about economy, and he was a man of convictions. He was very well liked by most people in the province for good reasons. May he rest in peace, he had a good life.

If Wehave wants to talk about a real racist, try Stephen Harper, who ask visitors from 122 countries to give fingerprints and picture of everyone that wants to enter the country.

Parizeau was an from the elite and and academic, so he was aloof and awkward with most people. However, it was said he was a gentleman, and generally a decent person. While I don't agree with his politics, he legitmately had expert knowledge of economics and finance.

Comparing him to to Hilter and Stalin is the the product of idiot, rancid know-nothing pea brains. He was a British trained economist, which means his philosophical bearings were the exact opposite of those scumbags. It's also a profound insult to those people who were actual victims of those monsters.

So the people who drive cars with license plates that read "je me souviens" want the rest of us to "get over it"?

There's irony for you.
Ultimate irony - Parizeau was more of an Anglophile than most Anglophones in Mtl, from his traditional Savile Row suits to Kings English, especially Brit style turning of phrase.

Nobless oblige, just sayin...

Before someone can become a Hitler or a Stalin they first have to start out with a willingness to hate others and to seek their isolation so that they can be marginalized and discriminated against. The only difference between xenophobes like Parizeau and infamous figures like Hitler and Stalin is in how far they were willing and able to pursue their prejudices. But they all start out the same: by deciding that they're better than others or that they deserve more than others or that the others are taking things away from people more deserving (who are inevitably people like themselves)

Hitler believed that the reason he was a failure and the reason why Germany lost the Great War was the fault of the Jews. Parizeau (whether he actually believed it himself or not) was quite happy to allow his followers to believe that the reason their lives were unfulfilled was because the English boogeyman was keeping them down. All despots and would-be despots start from the same place: the big lie.

Parizeau didn't want to put anglos into concentration camps I'm sure. But helped to sow the seeds of intolerance and aided in their codification into law which made it that much easier for some other nitwit to do it sometime down the road. It's called "unintended consequences".

Junior high level example of Godwin's Law.

Or this: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_Hitlerum

Full potato.

i was wondering when someone would bring up Godwin's Law.

I notice that you conveniently side-stepped the main thrust of the argument: that haters are distinguished from each other only by degree. Parizeau isn't nearly as bad as Hitler in most resepects, but he's no better than Hitler in others. Hate is at the root of everything Hitler did and it's the same motivating force behind the separatist zealots who drafted Bill 101. Laws like that open the door for greater abuses further down the road. After all, it's not like Jews were being chucked into ovens the day after the Nazis seized power in 1933. First the Nazis had to pass laws which made it legal to discriminate against Jews. Everything that came after was an extension of that. These things always start our benignly enough. Don't assume that because Anglos in Quebec aren't forced to wear a badge to identify themselves the way the Jews were forced to wear the Star of David that they aren't marginalized and discriminated against. Everywhere they turn Anglos are reminded of the fact that they are second class citizens. Bill 101 wasn't designed to make Anglophones speak French; it was designed to make Anglophones leave Quebec entirely. The punitive nature of the laws passed by successive nationalist leaning provincial governments make clear their intention. They don't want a French speaking Quebec. They want a French Quebec. A Quebec not just free of the English language, but of English speaking people.

Yet we never say anything bad regarding Saudi Arabia....a country that's probably worst in terms of human rights than North Korea and Syria combined

They are an ally. You don't want to have diplomatic tensions criticizing them even though there's a ton of crap that doesn't get that much media attention. US has a couple of key bases there also. The west needs some allies over there, it's a pick of the best of the worst.

Be patient -- they'll have their day in the sun and when the shit hits the fan there, it will be epic
