OT: The News Thread

sadly, many folks can't put terrorism into context.

One of the issues is that it is mostly random.

I mean most time somebody is murdered it is from a family member or drug related, etc.

If you avoid family and drugs you are not going to get murdered by family or drugs related persons. However with terrorism no matter how remote the chance you generally cannot avoid it. Going to work on 9/11, running the boston marathon, going to a movie, going to a concert, etc.

So basically it scares ppl.

I gave up on expecting people to understand things like global terrorism, gun control etc when the response to Sandy Hook wasn't to cut back on guns but were calls to arm teachers.

I also am finding it harder myself to stand up for our muslim friends, brothers and sisters when it seems whenever there is an attack of this sort, it is a muslim who perpetrates it. I know they are usually just loner nut balls like the Oklahoma bomber, the white guy in the Charleston Church etc but it is getting harder to say it is a religion of peace.

I hate myself for having thoughts querying if the guy in the food court in the muslim attire is going to blow himself up. I usually push them right out of my mind but they are there.

hence they are "terrorized"

One should be able to go to a soccer game, a cute girl with a long pony tail concert and not wonder if some ******* is going to kill himself and you.

I feel like no one who actually had Muslim friends would say "I find it harder to stand up for my Muslim friends" because of attacks like this one.

frustrating for sure but this is probably an extremely safe time to bring somebody into the world compared to pretty much every other period of recent history
That's true. I'm thinking of not putting my last name for the kid though. I'm not sure if s/he will grow up a science loving atheist like the parents but a middle eastern last name does not one any good.

That's... really sad. I can see where you're coming from but it's pretty unfair you have to consider this because people are ignorant ****s.
