OT: The News Thread

so as someone who is accustomed to extreme weather events on a weekly or biweekly basis, is this blizzard in Toronto I am hearing about actually noteworthy, or are yall just blizzard deprived?

for context, the past two weekends my markets have been closed cause of nor'easters dumping upwards of 10+mm of rain and 10+ cm of snow with a healthy mix of ice.

today it snowed heavily for a couple hours and has since been teeming with rain and 90+ km/hr wind gusts. expecting upwards of 15 mm of rain. perhaps more snow tomorrow.
A police sergeant I know messaged me this morning to say they were shutting down both the DVP and the Gardiner because they had approx 300 cars stuck behind a transport truck that couldn’t move and people were all getting out of their vehicles. Wasn’t a fun morning for a lot of people. On the bright side, if you’re working from home and had nowhere to be, maybe it was a ton of fun!

I read we got 32cm by 1pm. not sure what the final tally is/was/will be

okay okay I take it back. legit storm!

there is a hilarious video from the intersection of Yonge and York Mills that shows traffic blocked literally in every direction cause no one could make it up the hills!

I forget that Toronto cannot really handle much in the way of snow buildup anymore.

I will now prepare to trudge through the parking lot that is a sheet of ice where our receptionist already wiped out today. and then take my alternative route home cause I know the big puddle at the bottom of the large hill on the highway will be particularly nasty today (that and the hill is usually icy af)

and hope the 15+ mm of rain that fall today, onto the frozen ground cause it was like -17 all weekend, has time to run off/evaporate before the temperature drops back down below zero and fucking freezes everything. this is pretty typical Halifax shit, although anecdatally more extreme cause climate change.

I dunno if I can ever remember this happening growing up in the GTA...
